by bigred, Aug 26, 2005 12:00AM
hello ladies! I am new to this site,(well actually I have been reading the comments for about 2 months now) but this is my first time writing. I have to say that all you people are great! Here is my question. After 3 losses, I am now 14 weeks pregnant,(yeah! my farthest prenancy so far) I suffer from allergies and was wondering if any of you know if there any "safe" meds to take for allergies. Your comments are greatly appreciated. thank you christina

Hi,
I've been visiting this forum for about 4 months.
I asked my Dr about my allergy meds. My OB said to buy over the counter Clartin. But, I do have allegra. He told me to not take that anymore (I didnt even pop one pill) BUT my other gp told me not to take anything that goes into my blood stream. So he gave me some stuff to sniff. All I take are my synthroid and prenatal pills tho. I'm to scared to take anything else, so I have been suffering. I do sniff my stuff when it gets really bad. I'm tooo lazy to go downstairs to see what the sniffy stuff is, but if someone wants the name I will go fetch it.

Congrtats. I hope everything will go good for you. I to had m/c, I had two and one at 20 weeks and am curently almost 22 weeks so I know how you feel. I was having mad sinus/allergy problems a few months ago and my doc said it was O.K. for my to continue to use my Flonas, but really just call up your doc (O.B.) and ask what they suggest because every situation is differant. Good luck, keep us posted.

hi thanks for your comment.
i also have alergys, in the 9 wks i was pg they played up pretty bad and the doc said the only really safe thing to take is panadol which helped a little. Did you take metformin all the way through because when i concieved i was on metformin and clomid but the doc said that i only need to take for the 5 days while on clomid

Hi, I'm pretty new here, too and everyone's been great.  I suffered from insomnia with my pregnancy- 3 months with no sleep and my ob had me take Benedryl.  He did stop my Allegra for my allergies when I got pregnant.  I know it won't help during the day if it makes you sleepy.  Of course you should double check with your doc, too.

I have been taking metformin the whole 14 weeks(so far). My doctor first told me to take it until 11 weeks, but at my last visit she said I could take during my whole pregnancy if I wanted or stop. The decision was left up to me, so I have just been taking it. I am a little confused as to if I should stop or not... any advice?

i stoped taking metformin at 12 weeks, i think you should stop taking it according to my dr becuse when you passe the 12th week the risk of M/C drops dramatically.
good luck :)

Thanks, ill call my doctor on Monday. Can you get flonas over the counter or do you need a prescription?

You need a script for it, I had one from my PCP but I'm sure your doc will give you one for whatever he/she feels that you should be on.

I am not sure on allergy meds but I know for sure Benadryl Allergy is ok. I have taken it in all my pregnancies and have 4 healthy babies. It knocks you out though so not the best for during the day.

by bigred, Aug 27, 2005 12:00AM
thank you for the allergy info, I'm going to try benadryl because I am dying over here.

My OB has me on regular Zyrtec.  Allegra makes the baby irritable that's why they don't prescirbe it.  Don't take anything like Afrin either.  I wouldn't recommend Benadryl either.  I took it once while pregnant with my first child and didn't feel him move for 2 days!

Thanks!

Thank you, just a question, can you get zyrtec over the counter or do you need a prescription for it?

by mmj33, Sep 06, 2005 12:00AM
I work at a pharmacy, Zyrtec, Allegra and Flonase all require a prescription.

Just consult your doctor before taking any medicine while you are pregnant.

List of drug which is approved by FDA:-
Allegra
• Clarinex
• Flonase
• Nasonex
• Patanol
• Zyrtec
• Nasacort AQ
• Claritin-D

I just got off the phone with GlaxoSmithKline regarding taking Flonase when pregnant.
Flonase falls under the "C" catagory for pregnancy drugs which means it was tested on animals and had an adverse effect on the fetus.
So basically they said if you dont have to take it while pregnant DONT.

Can you take Flonase while trying to become pregnant? I am a severe allergy sufferer, and don't want to stop the dru until I find out I am pregnant. Is this a bad thing to do?

by tiredbuthappy, Mar 29, 2009 07:58PM
Ask your OB, since they all have differing opinions on medications in pregnancy. My OB has allowed me to take flonase after 12 weeks, but would not allow me to take it during the first trimester. I suspect it is probably OK as long as you stop as soon as you get pregnant. A lot of times, situations like this boil down to risk vs benefit. If you are truly a terrible allergy sufferer, then the benefits may far outweigh the minute risks. I do know some people who had to be on allergy medications throughout the duration of their pregnancies. Plus, as I learned, it can take much longer than you plan to actually get pregnant. That can be months of suffering.
