Yes, you need to brush his teeth, don't let him do to be with a bottle as that is the fastest way to ruin his teeth. I would ask the pedi or get in with a pedi dentist just to see. All of mine have bright, pearly whites, so I have no idea about the discoloration.

i brush his teeth but not with anything so would you reccomend anything.. we see the pedi in 3 months:S ive read online thetre are multiple reasons.. could have been a fever causing it or an illness at the time or malnutrition but he is perfect with his nutrition and is taking more milk YAY and gaining weight.. I'm soo happy..I'm thinking if i was the cause during my pregnancy.. I took my pills but then i was soo sick on the prenatals that the ob said to stop around i was about 5 mos...but i took in calcium and my folic acid as well as drank a glass of choc milk( i hate the taste of white milk) and had a yogourt.. i am allergic to milk.. it causes me to get ear infections, sore throat and migrains oh and a lovely runny nose:S I dont know if its worth it but i brush his teeth twice a day just with a bit of water though but should i go with after every meal? or would that be too much?

i read that you don't HAVE to use anything to brush their teeth with, youcould just brush them. but the flouride-free toothpastes made for infants are safe to use and reccommended. you should try to brush them at least twice a day. doesn't have to be a firm brushing, just enough to clean.

not sure what causes the discoloration either, as Andi said, i would ask his dr. at the next appt. and then inquire about further with a pedi dentist when you take him for his first visit. i think they reccommend the first visit to be sometime during their first year (after they turn 1). good luck.

Are you giving him juice? A bottle in bed? I know that babies teeth can actually rot if they are allowed to have a bottle in bed or too much juice. You could ask his pediatrician also. Most babies have white teeth, so I would be a bit concerned. Brush them gently and see if it's something that comes off.

he has received juice a total of 3 times usually only water..he gets a bottle before bed while i hold him..he is too lazy to hold his bottle still prefers to rub his hair or rub my hand versus holding his bottle lol..also i diluted the juice..i thought baby teeth were supposed to be really white too..i have white teeth..his father well not really but him its coffee and smoking stains...and lack of brushing.. i havent tried the toothpaste yet...maybe that would help? i felt i ought to ask since ive never seen this n i keep thinking it might have been lack of calcium while i carried?

the toothpaste would not really whiten his teeth as I doubt they're discolored b/c of staining.  Plus, infant toothpaste doesn't really contain any of the whitening ingridients like adult toothpaste would.  I'd definitely ask a ped dentist to take a look at his teeth.  Did they come in discolored already?  Discolored teeth might also be a sign of vitamin deficiency.  Not trying to scare you but definitely check it out.  Good luck and yes, do brush his little teeth.  DD's 18 months and barely let's me near her mouth let alone allow me to brush her teeth thoroughly so enjoy the times when he's not opposing it too much yet.

Didn't the doc give you an rx for flouride drops? Don't use flouridated toothpaste just yet, too much and it can actually have an adverse effect on the teeth as well (in the form of spots)

the toothpaste for infants is flouride free, but most doctors prescribe vitamens for infants that contain flouride. the thing is, using the flouride-free toothpaste won't do anything for the discoloration because there is no flouride in it. so, in order to try and better the discoloration, you would have to use a toothpaste that has flouride and you shouldn't do that yet bc is is too young. if i were you, i would keep brushing his teeth as you have been, either with the flouride-free toothpaste or without and at your next appt., bring up the discoloration to you dr. and if he/she doesn't mention it first, ask about vitamens w. flouride. my pedi didn't prescribe them for edward until he was off of formula because he said the formula had all the vitamens he needed, but then again, formula doesn't contain flouride, which your little guy might need. in some areas, tap water is flouridated, but i know many people don't use tap water anymore (i used bottled) so thats why mr dr. suggested edward have a vitamen with flouride. good luck. don't worry so much about it until you talk to the dr. i know, all these things we worry about as moms is enough to drive ya nuts!

Flouride is separate from vitamins. They are their own drop and it is an rx. And the flouride itself won't whiten the teeth, but will help to strengthen his teeth.

Hmm, docs never pushed vitamins for mine, but I guess I do remember one friend who had those awful brown vitamin drops w/ flouride. Our boys just had the separate flouride drops and as they got older, the tablets.

yep yep. thats what we have. the awful brown drops. he HATES them. the dr. prescribed them only bc i asked about vitamens. i was worried that once he stopped formula, he wouldn't be getting as much. i know he gets A and D and calcium from the milk, but i guess the dr. was trying to appease me.
