bethamethasone and birth defects

Under my ring finger, I had a rash that I found out was athlete's foot.  My doctor gave me clotrimazole betamethasone cream 0.05%.  I believe the tube was about 15 grams, and I probably used half the tube.  What I didn't know was that I had just conceieved.  When I did some research, I found that betamethasone is teratogenic (even the topical kind at small doses).  Some of the side effect can be very horrible.  Right now, I'm 9 weeks.  My first doctor's appointment is at 11 weeks.  I've been almost sick about what I'm going to find out.  I am going to ask if maybe I should have an early sonogram to see if if the baby is abnormally growing.  I'm not sure if it would be too soon to see a cleft palate or not (which is one of the many side effects).  Is there any advice you can provide to me?  Should I insist on seeing my doctor early?  Maybe I'm overreacting?
Thank you.

How far along were you when you stopped using it? Did you tell your OB. Usually they say anything that happens in the first few weeks is water under the bridge, but I would tell your Dr you are worried & ask what they can do to ease your worries. I know I would feel the same way!

Hi.  I talked to my pharmicist about it.  I had been given the cream for a rash that I had on my elbows and knees.  She said that for just the small areas I was using it on, that such small amount of the med shouldn't be harmful.  Since you only used it on a small spot on your finger I wouldn't fret too much.  Pearl is right, it's water under the bridge now, but you should inform your doc of all meds you may be taking. Rx, otc and herbal.  Good luck to you.

Clotrimazole is a Pregnancy Category B, and Betamethasone is category C.

B:
Animal studies have revealed no evidence of harm to the fetus, however, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
OR
Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester.
C:
Animal studies have shown an adverse effect and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
OR
No animal studies have been conducted and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.

(Women are given betamethasone in very large doses later in pregnancy for lung maturation purposes if they are having preterm labor symptoms.)  I'm sure your doctor will put your mind at ease.  You could also talk to your local pharmacist.
