bleeding cramping hcg not doubling

Hi everyone,
I conceived on 9/09 or 9/11. Everything was going fine till last monday 10/10 i started light bleeding. Finally on Wed went to hospital. hcg was around 15,000 and had ultrasound. Saw baby. Heard heartbeat. Also a bleed somewhere else in my uterus not where baby was. Sent home with diagnosis threatened miscarriage. Ended up back in hospital on Sat. still bleeding little worse no tissue. Doctor drew blood hcg was only 22,000. He proceeded to tell me I was having a miscarriage.Mind you he didn't even give me an exam or an u/s.
I thought hard about it and was a little upset cuz I didn't feel as though he could say that for certain without more information. He even told me to take motrin for pain. It is now Tuesday I was able to get in for another blood test yesterday. Also a pelvic. cervix is still closed. Last night I realized I was having cramping at intervals. Much like period cramping. Lower back, believe this is a sign of miscarriage. But my cervix wasn't dilated.
Confused and waiting hoping for some insight from someone. First pregnancy not planned but we got very excited couldn't have a better partner supportive and wonderful. We just don't know what to think!

Oh my GOD!!!!  The EXACT same thing happened to me, I mean even down to the dates are very close! They sent me home told me to take some tylenol, I was saying to myself but you aren't even sure! Only difference is my bleeding was OCt. 3 through like the 5th, cervix was still closed and all. I went ot have my hcg level tested it was at 200, and I went again yesterday to have it tested which will be the tell all, as My hcg level should have rocketed by now. But be in encouraged I have read plenty of success stories. Have you had your hcg level tested?

thanks for the encouragement I am awaiting hcg results now. Hoping they will be in today but nurse said could have to wait till tomorrow cuz it was late yesterday afternoon when the blood was drawn. I just wish I knew what was going on...

I am 8 weeks pregnant today and have been bleeding since Friday.....mostly spotting, red blood mostly w/ some small clotting.  I had an ultrasound on Friday and we saw the heartbeat and the baby is measuring as it should be.  I was tested for HCG levels on Friday and then rechecked yesterday and my levels are not going up as they should be.  My dr does not feel very optomistic because of this but says there is still hope...(although I'm feeling very hopeless at this point)   He said I will have another ultrasound next week.  I am having a very hard time waiting around here.  I'm still bleeding and feel so sad and scared as to what's to come.  I think if my HCG levels would have been higher he would have been more hopeful.  Friday they were 5700 and Monday they were only up to 7400.
This is the worst feeling...waiting for a bomb to drop and so hard to be hopeful at this point.  How long can this go on?

I know it is so horrible. It does take a little time to know for sure and you are better to wait and try to relax. The hardest part for me is that I expected to be okay if i miscarried but i felt so hopeless and devastated when the the signs of it began. I wanted to be healthier when I got pregnant and have been worried a little from the beginning. I feel like a seesaw with all of my emotions. Now I want to know instead of being in the dark anymore.
Have you been experiencing any cramping? Mine seem to come in waves which to me is indicator of my body trying to expell the baby.
It is hard and scary and I am so sorry that you are going through this too! I wish you the best of luck and hope everything works out for the best. Were you planning it. and do you have a good support system. The worst thing is you really are the one that goes through the hardest of it no matter what. Tell me more.

just got my hcg levels and they went up only to 29000 from 22000 on Saturday 2 days. the last jump was from 15000 to 22000 so they are at least stable and if i do the math from the beginning they did not quite double so maybe I just have lower than average hormone levels. Anyone have similar situation in past and give me advice on how this turned out for them?

It sounds like your levels truely are going up and they are much higher than mine...I have read that you can't read too much into the levels..some woman have low levels and deliver perfectly healthy babies!  It seems that your situation is promising because it's been a week now for you!?  It's also got to be so hard because you still don't really know what's going on.  It's SO hard when you hear that heartbeat and you already feel in love w/ that baby.  I do have a 15 month old son and I had a great pregnancy w/ him..no bleeding or anything of the sort.  So this is coming as a shock for us but I also do feel lucky to have him and I know whatever is meant to be will be.  
What did the nurse say to you about the levels today!  This is so frustrating!  If I am having a miscarriage I never really realized that it would drag out like this...my emotions are all over the place as I'm not sure what to feel or what I'm dealing with.  
I am having some very slight cramping.....more like menstrual cramps that come and go...
I wish you the best of luck too...I concieved almost the same time you did....it does help to know that we aren't going through this alone...what a mystery....

I know I keep thinking I will know whats going on when i get the results to each test. It is definately a mystery and a wonder. I am glad that you have the joy of another child in your life.
The doctor actually called me direct and told me just to keep positive as far as she's concerned I still have a viable pregnancy. I have been plagued with gynelogical problems for years and this doctor has seen me through a lot of it. I had a leep surgery when I was 18 yo and for some reason for the last 2 years have been having dysfunctional uterine bleeding at different times. Seems to correspond with sexual activity. Thought for sure it was from the old scar tissue. Tried the pill didn't work. Then I accidently ran out of pills. I felt guilty about it and didn't tell my boyfriend right away. We had sex 1 time without protection and another time the condom broke. Seemed destined when that happened. That is actually when I think I got pregnant. Funny I did't have my usual irregular bleading that month.Probably was a hormonal problem. At thirty with many close calls I was starting to think I couldn't get pregnant. Now here i am. Hoping for the best. I really hope that you get some good newa or that you get pregnant again real soon!

Stardust, Ive seen this situation over and over again on here, where women's HGC's do not double. But most of them go on to have Normal pregnancies. Your levels are going up, so for now I would take comfort in that. Will they do another U/s? You said that you saw the heartbeat, so that in itself I would think is a good sign..

so are you still having bleeding now?  how heavy is it and how often?  mine always seems to be when I go to the bathroom mostly.....when are you supposed to have another ultrasound?
are you working?  I am going to work tomorrow...I'm a bit nervous because I'm afraid I'll start bleeding heavily or cramping at work but I guess I have to go on w/ my normal life...I can't sit in the house and dwell on what's happening...

I don't wanna be the bearer of bad news, but I got my results back and my hcg has dropped all the way to a two.It looks like the bleeding was a miscarriage, and since it was so early in the pregnancy not much tissue was there. I really wish you the best of luck in your pregnancy.

New to this site, but need someone to share with and you guys sound great.  I'm 6wks and have started to spot.  I go for my first U/S on Thursdy and very scared to death.  Breast are still very tender.  I wonder if two may have attached and one is not viable and is starting to leave my body.  ITS killing ME NOT KNOWING!!!!  This is my third IVF .

Hi Stacey,
don't know much about invitro and twins but I do know from all of the research I have done in the past week that spotting is not a big deal. An aweful lot of women do spot and it means almost nothing unless you start to see tissue which is grey or white and stringy. What about your HCG hormone levels do you know anything about where those are or are do they have you waiting til thursday for everything?

hey there.  Yes they have me waiting until thursday.  I went a couple weeks ago for blood work up.  Went in on Friday with a 439 on monday was 1500.  They said numbers were good.  I'm really scared.  What can you do?

I can't tell you all how relieved I was just to see that I'm not alone. I have been experiencing 8 days of spotting and cramping but my hcg levels are going up. I have also been stressing by not seeing a doctor,  but rather talking to a nurse practitioner over the phone. They finally scheduled me for an ultrasound tomorrow. It is making me anxious but hopefully I will have an answer. A co-worker of mine spotted off and on for 30 days and the doctors never figured out why. She went on to deliver I healthy baby so that has served as some hope for me now. Best of luck to all of you. Here's to maybe May/June babies!

hi all sorry to break the chain but i have a disturbing question! i took a Accu Clear hpt this morning and about 3-5 mins later i got a very very faint positive, one line was extremely dark (the line in the right window)and the line in the left window was visible but much lighter,barley visible, not a slight shade of pink more darker its like u can see it but its not pink but it's there, am sorry if i sound confusing but i paid more than 20 bucks on a ept +/- hpt to take tommorrow morning and iam worried i will get a bfn and waste my $. any help is greatful, as anyone had a barley visible line and still be preggo, ( i should be 20 to 23 dpo.

i don't want to get your hopes up but with this pregnancy( i am almost 20 weeks)i did a few tests and all i got was very faint lines in the positive area so u could very well be preggo. also it could be that you are hopng so much that you think you see a line and it is indeed negative, it happened to my sister. i hope that is not the case for you and i hope you get your BFP tomm. good luck to you and keep us posted after you take it.

I had a similar situation at the end of Aug.  Found out prego on 16th and had light spotting, in two days cramping and heavier bleeding.  Went to ER and was told not to worry some women have this.  Went to OBGYN and told to have blood work.  Blood work revealed falling levels and within 24 hrs. bled like A/F was here to stay.  I don't mean to discourage you in any way, but I also don't like to get hopes up.  The best advise I can give you is let nature do what it is going to do and keep trying and if nature proves the Dr's wrong then have yourself a giggle and know that it was your time.  Good luck and baby dust to all****

I am still bleeding and working my usual job is not very strenuous but I help a friend on Sundas's sometimes and it was strenuous this week and i felt more blood from some of the things i did. I am not seeing a ton of blood but it seems to be continuous.I felt horrible for going to work and doing to much on Sunday especially after my doctor told me my pregnancy was still viable. The guilt and confusion are the worst parts one second you are dealing with a loss and the next second you feel guilty for trying to deal with a loss that you are uncertain of. My poor boyfriend. It is a really bad time for us to be having a baby but he was so devoted about it. When he thought I was miscarrying I think he felt a little releaved and now its on again maybe.. Ugh this is crazy

hi all, i also have gone through this and have read many other posts with the same story.

i had spotting at 5 weeks, hcgs were 23000, 30460, 34000.
doctor diagnosed blighted ovum and therefor miscarriage...

two weeks later after not passing any pregnancy tissue/clots, the doc ordered a d+c, upon day of d+c i had an ultrasound which showed a perfect little baby and strong heartbeat.... the docs had got it wrong! they eventially came to the conclusion that i was carrying twins but had lost one.
i am now in my 13 week and had u/s today, baby is doing fine!!!
cant help but think if i had of listened to my doc at 5 weeks i would have aborted a perfectly healthy baby!

so please dont rush into a d+c.
as i said i have heard hundreds of stories of hcgs not doulbling but all have been fine. as long as your numbers dont decrease try not to worry! ( i know its impossible) but sometimes the docs can optimistically negative so as not to get your hopes up, but i beleive it causes unnecessary stress.

I am amazed at how frequently I hear that the doctor's order a D&C when there id still a healthy baby in the womb. I have seen that repeatedly on these forums. Oh the joys of western medicine! I don't think I am losing a twin (no history in either family). I do know that I am not rushing into anything. I will just have to await the outcome as slow and agonizing as it may be. I am miserable not knowing though. I will certainly know more on Friday with the ultrsound. Still cramping and bleeding.

I am so anxious to hear how your ultrasound goes tomorrow!  I am on day 7 of bleeding and don't get to go back to the dr till next thursday for a follow up ultrasound, everyday is an eternity...(i had the one last friday and there was a healthy heartbeat and baby measuring as it should be)....I am now 8 1/2 weeks along...I am feeling so many things...I'm so terrified and sad and so hard not to think the worst as my dr did not sound very optomistic due to my low hcg levels..they are rising as of Monday but not as they should be.

I had my ultrasound on Wednesday but the doctor couldn't tell much. My hcg numbers are going up, the cramping has stopped, but I'm still bleeding. I go for another ultrasound next Wednesday and will hopefully know more. Best of luck to the others in the same boat, I'll be thinking about you.

Thank you I am about 5 1/2 weeks from what I know to be the date of conception. So still very early. All the question marks make it feel like an eternity in the past week. I am still bleeding also and worried cuz it has a strong strange odor to it. Still having cramping too. I have not seen any tissue though and am still experiencing a lot of pregnancy symptoms.
I am so sorry you have to wait till next thursday to find out anymore about your situation. Please feel free to email me at ***@**** if you need to get any frustration off of your chest. Has to be one of the toughest things in the world to have these question marks about your baby!

Hi All,
   Don't mean to be the bearer of bad news, but I too had the bleeding and cramping, and it ended in a miscarriage.  I started with *light* brown spotting at 5 weeks; it lasted for 4 days, and then stopped for 3 days.  The next week I was horrified to discover some red blood when I wiped after urinating, and later it turned to light bleeding.  Overnight I passed some more blood, but by morning it had gotten a little heavier.  I called the doctor, and she sent me to the ER.  They did a external then vaginal ultrasound.  When they pulled out the vaginal ultrasound probe, I began to flood blood.  Ended up passing some tissue, and eventually had a full blown miscarriage.  My hcg level was only 206, which although it's low, wasn't impossible for being 6 weeks along.  The ultrasounds didn't show much of anything- other than that I was miscarrying.  Just had my 2 day follow-up with my Ob/Gyn doctor today, and he advised that the next time we ttc I take 1 baby asprin a day.  I have Rheumatoid arthritis, and he said that the RA can cause low hormone levels in early pregnancy and cause problems in sustaining the pregnancy.  He's had other women with 5+ miscarriages take the 81mg asprin and have healthy full term pregnancies.
Anyway, I know many other women who have spotted and had healthy babies 9 months later, but obviously I wasn't as lucky.  I am crushed that my loss might have been prevented with a simple baby asprin from Wal-Mart.... but my Rheumatoid arthritis doctor and my general doctor never told me this- and my HMO wouldn't allow me to see the Ob/Gyn right off the bat, until it was already too late.
I hope that your spotting stops, and that you go on to have a happy bouncing baby!!  Keep after your doctor- and don't be afraid to call and insist on an ultrasound if you are worried!

Update for anyone who may come back to this thread. Had my ultrasound on friday showed a healthy baby with a good strong heartbeat. 155 they have me at about 7 1/2 weeks although i know when i conceived. should be about 6 weeks 1 day. The nurse called this morning. I have a bleed in my uterus and it apparently has gotten worse. I guess I have to be really careful but that everything will probably be allright. No sex but of course i did have sex on saturday and it has gotten a little worse. i am so depressed. Will this get better? Will I bleed throuought my whole pregnancy is there a way to make it better? HELP

Hi - I am new to this site and your entries gave me a little hope.  I had a miscarriage before the birth of my son so when I started getting slight red blood with burning menstral cramps I was worried and went to the ER.  THey diagnosed me with threatened miscarriage.  Unfortunately I feel like I am still miscarrying though.  They did a HCG level count yesterday and it was about 580 (seems low for 5 weeks).  I have been cramping since yesterday.  This morning I saw a small clot in the toilet.  I don't think any tissue though (is this really noticeable?).  Also today I have been bleeding and cramping all day.  I only see the blood after I go to the bathroom though and wipe.  None on pads (sorry if tmi).  I go in tomorrow for another test.  I am prepping myself for them to tell me the numbers are down.  But you all have given me some hope that maybe its up.  Right now I want to just know so we can move on.  As an upbeat note for all of you that have to unfortunately go through a miscarriage - my son shows that you don't have to wait a full cycle.  I waited a week after my bleeding stopped with my first miscarriage (then my husband had the flu for a week so we actually waited two weeks) then started to ttc again.  A month later I found out I was pregnant with Ben and he is wonderful!! They just do more ultrasounds to pinpoint the age thats all.

I have read a lot of the comments on this page and I needed to ask a question. I'm having some of the same problems as a lot of you and I was wondering if anyone could help me. on the 8th of this month I had an ultrasound to see how far along I am and they said the sac looked to be about 5 weeks. My doctor told me that the baby didn't look like it was developing...more or less they couldn't see anything. So I had an hCG test done and it was 5,547 and then two days later I had another one done and it only came up to 6,200. I know this doesn't look good. And my doctor is trying to pressure me into having a D&C, which I wouldn't do. B/c he says he's sure that this pregnany is going to end in miscarrage (miscarriage). I've talked to alot of people and they said that they haven't heard good things about my doctor and so I called another doctor I've been to before and she said she would give me a second opinion, but I can't get in to see her until the 1st os Dec. getiing to the point of my post...Tonight when i went to the bathroom I noticed that I had some dried blood in my underwear (sorry if tmi) and when I wiped there was some blood on the toilet paper (just a little bit). I was wondering if this pregnancy is almost certain to miscarry since my hCG levels didn't double and I've had some slight spotting. And will the doctor really be able to tell how much development is there at 5 weeks?? I'm 6 weeks today (11-14) and I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. Can anyone help me???? Thank you!

I am new on this site, I have some experience to share. I am from Shanghai China, now live in Canada. I had ovary cyst 10 years ago and two tubs all blocked, my doctor in Shanghai treated me with traditional herb medicine and it got rid of the cysts, one of the tube now partly open. I did IVF this October in Canada, Retrieval on Oct 26, transfer on Oct 29. I started a little spotting on Nov 5, brownish color, stoped a few days, then last weekend, Nov 11, 12, 13, bleeding like bright red color, on Nov 14 morning, I found a big tissue size like a thumb, came out, I took it to the hospital, I thought I lost everything and was very sad, I phoned at noon, nurse told me my hcg level is 115, so it's positive, she said the tissue is not any part of baby, just from uterus. But I am still scared caz I was still bleeding. I called my doctor in China, she suggested me to take pearl powder. We have such medicine in store for sale in China. So I bought some here, (it's expensive in Canada, I live in Vancouver), Since I took pearl powder, the bleeding gradually stopped, now it's only sometimes a little spot, it's probably because I am taking prometrium to help the unters lining, it will cause a little spot. I am gonna have another blood test tomorrow morning to see if the hcg level goes up or not, if it's good, then u/s ahead. I think the pearl powder does help to comfort the baby, and cool down the blood. I should take 3g in the morning, 3g in the evening, 6g per day but I don't have enough here. I took actually 2g a day.
I am not sure if my experience will help others, but just like to share my experience. I really want this time will work, I 've been waitting a baby for so long.

i tested positive for being preg. my HCG level was 2270 i have been spotting since nov.23 i have cramping and back pain and my level for HCG droppped to 1900 they only saw an empty sack on my ultersound and said there was no preg. but the doc said the level drop was so small it could just be a difference in labs and i have to go tomorrow for another hcg test but thinking i am sure i have lost it but that littlt hope that there is still a chance is killing me i have had 3 eptopics but they said my tubes looked fine.Question has any one had pain spotting and dropping hcg level and still been preg. and it be o.k please e-mail if you can just let me know one way or the other purple_aconite***@**** thanks

dear women who are ahving trouble with cramping and bleeding.....
my daughter-in-law is pregnant the 2nd time, the first ended in miscarriage...at about 6 weeks along.....she had her last period nov. 8th and is extremly regular, she has not had a period, and today is dec, 16.....preg. calculator says she is 5 weeks and 3 days pregnant.....she called me today with cramping and some light bleeding.....of course she is upset???? thinks it might be a miscarriage........was 2 months ago she miscarried the first time....they had been trying to concieve (conceive).......has anyone out there had cramping and some bleeding??? and NOT MISCARRIED??????
if anyone has experiences like this please let me know.........

okay so heres my story i am scared to death. I have been bleeding about 2 weeks now, go to my OB/GYN and let him know, he sends me to get HCG levels done... well the first one was 15,733 the second dropped to 15,403 so he tells me you need to get a D&C done, i said no before i do that i want another HCG level done, so he sends me back for that and it came back 16,627, so he tells me well i cant tell you that you are miscarrying now because your HCG level has went back up. He sends me to the hospital to find out if i am pregnant in the tubes come to find out i'm not thank god! Now, he said all we can do is wait get another HCG level done and go from there. I am 8 weeks pregnant, he has yet to listen to the babys heartbeat which come friday i am making him do. Does anyone have any idea what could be happening? I never heard of HCG levels going down then back up!
