blood in stool

blood in stool

My daughter is 5 and a half months old. For about 1.5 months now she has had diarrhea (often green, mucousy, and with a foul odor) streaked with bright red blood. Initially we only saw an occasional speck of blood, but now we see streaks everyday. I initially  eliminated citrus, dairy, eggs, and nuts from my diet, and have since also eliminated soy, sesame, chocolate, onions, and wheat, and have reduced my corn intake... and things have not gotten any better for having done so.

Not sure if this is related, but she also spits up frequently (no blood here though), and her cheeks/chin/nose become very rosy immediately after feeding and remain that way for about an hour (though this seems to have improved a bit since I eliminated the onions and cut back on the corn). Otherwise she seems like a very healthy and happy baby (with good weight gain, and very little colic).

Her pediatrician has done stool cultures and a rectal exam and everything came back normal. Her GI doc. wants to do a sigmoidoscopy, and then medicate (assuming it is some form of colitis). I'm hesitant to have the scope done, and furthermore to medicate without really figuring out the true cause. So far the pediatrician has refused to refer us to an allergist (due to the likelihood of inaccurate results).

I'm also wondering if perhaps this could be related to the rotovirus vaccine (rototeq), or to a breastfeeding issue (foremilk/hindmilk imbalance or overeating)... and am furthermore concerned that such a restrictive diet could be causing my breastmilk to have a loss in nutritinal value (as she eats for about twice as long now... and as I have lost a lot of weight, despite the fact that I am still consumoing a good amount of food (in quantity, not variety)

Please let me know if you have any insight into this issue. Thank you!!!!

I think they should do the scope as it would be terrible if it were something like colitis that was left untreated.

Also I have had children with rotavirus and they haven't had blood in their stools; although it could be possible I see it being unlikely as the pediatrician would have said something.

I feel the only way of figuring out if its an issue for her or an issue of breastfeeding is to have the scope done. Best wishes!
