bloody stool

by alindsay, Sep 29, 2003 12:00AM
I have a 15month old son and for the last two days he has been fussy and constipated. He would hold his stomach like it was hurting and would cry if I touched it. When he had a bm both days they were very hard like marbles and green in color. Then today when he had bm it was still green but runny and had what looked like clots of blood and when I wiped his butt it had blood on it. And with a clean wipe i wiped him again and got a little bit of blood on the wipe. Any advice on what could be wrong with my son would be appritiated.

Take him to see a Dr. asap, I wouldn't let that go for any time. It may just be the stool causing the blood but you never know.

Call his pediatrician immediately.  I had a bad situation with my son when he was 6 months old and wouldn't wish that on anyone.  We believe he had a GI bleed due to a vaccine (Rotashield) that they yanked off the market.

Most likely, your son was constipated and had a minute fissure (that was one thing they were considering in my son's case) which is very common, like a minute tear because their tushies are so small, or it could have been a minute hemorrhoid, but I doubt that.  I am sure it is fine but make sure you keep a stool sample to bring to the doctor.  Just put the whole diaper in a plastic bag and take it with you.  They will check the stool for occult blood.

The good thing is that an internal bleed like my son had, the stool is black and tarry.  It is a good sign that your kid's poop is green.  Bright red blood is usually all right because it is fresh blood.  If it is dark red that is a problem.  But talk to your doctor who knows much better than I do about this.

Good luck.

I agree, it is probably an anal fissure. I would call the pediatrician just to double check. An actual GI bleed would produce black or tarry stool or a coffee ground consistency stool.

Not much they can do for it except suggest some ways to keep his stool softer (juice works well for my son)
