breech delivery

breech delivery

Has anyone had a vaginal birth with a breech baby or experienced external cephalic version to get a breech baby to turn?
I'm almost 35 weeks and so far may baby seems to like sitting with his head up under my ribs :(
I'm trying getting into all the positions to get him to turn (not easy!) but he seems to be comfortable where he is. I just wondered if anyone could give me any advice.
Thanks,
Ruth xx

Hey Ruth!
I dont think they will do a vaginal delivery if baby dont turn. I dont see how its hardly possible. I have never heard of the method you are talking about. Is that where they basiclly put their hand in their and turn baby?

I believe they get hold of certain parts of the baby (head and bottom I think) from the outside of your bump and basically push it round. Doesn't sound great to me :( I've read it isn't very nice and can cause problems with the baby's heart rate, problems with the uterus and can rupture the membranes when they actually do it.
They give you the option here in the UK to have a vaginal delivery if you want one. Personally I don't fancy that, or the version thing or a c-section!! I just hope he turns by himself.

I am almost 33 weeks and last check up, my baby was still head up as well. They discussed the options with me, and they said the next step if the baby had not flipped by 36 weeks, they would do an u/s, to make sure. Then they told me they could try the ecv, which was only 65 % effective (I am scared to death,I hope it does not come to that! It definately does not sound fun)...And if that did not work, they would plan a c-section (where I am in the US, they would not procede with a vaginal delivery. I don't think My tiny body could handle a breech delivery anyways..) I am so nervous that my baby won't flip on her own, I am hoping and praying she does. It makes me so nervous because my first dd was already head down at 7 months, and here I am over 8 months, with a breech baby(last check.) I have an appt in 5 days, hopefully they will tell me she has flipped by now! Hoping....

My friend had a vaginal breech delivery (she is in the UK), they had her all set up incase she needed emergency c sect but baby was born vaginally breech after all, she did have to have an episiotomy though which took a while to heal but other than that mum and baby were both fine.

They usually dont do a vaginal delivery if a baby is breech. But you dont need to worry you still have a few wks left. Babies can turn at the last minute. And yes ive seen where they turn the baby. Thats done externally not internally.

Thanks all, I check where the heartbeat is with my doppler for a few seconds every few days :) he's still breech now but I have an ultrasound in 3 weeks to check his presentation again, hopefully he'll be head down by then! I have a feeling I'll end up with a planned section if he doesn't change position as I don't want the ecv after what I've read and I've just checked the internet for vaginal breech deliveries and some of the images......oh dear :( I couldn't!

Baby can change position at any time!  Hang in there!  Even a baby in the correct position can turn breech at the last minute...one can never be too sure of these things :)

External version, if done under the right circumstances in the hospital, is very safe.

But this of course is your choice, and many women would indeed elect a C/S if the baby is breech.  Best of luck!

My first baby was breech, he was head down till a day before 36 weeks.  I got really sick and was having lots of cramping and contractions.  Called the Dr. and they had me leave work and rest.  I was told to go to the hospital if they got closer or come to the Dr. if I was worried.  I kept my appt the next day and they discovered he was breech, later they told me due to his size that's probably why I was so uncomfortable.  They did an external aversion that afternoon in the hospital, they hook you up to the monitor first and watch baby, and they gave me a drug in the iv to relax my uterus, made my heart race.  They then used the u/s machine to watch the baby in between and to be careful of the cord.  They tried 3 times and were about to stop as they don't want to stress baby.  I asked for one more try and they got it.  He turned again that night.  I could feel him crawling up my side and sure enough he was breech the next week.  He decided to turn again just shy of 39 weeks and stayed head down.  I was told babies can turn anytime, even just before labor.  Not too common for them to turn after 36 weeks just because they get too big and it makes it more difficult, but Carson was over 10 lbs. at birth, so they figured he was at least 8 lbs. when they turned him and over 9 lbs. when he turned the last time.  My little brother did the same thing to my mom, turned about a week before birth.  She was surprised I opted to try the aversion.  They had me ready to go in case I needed an emergency c-section as that is always a possiblity.  Very uncomfortable, but I would have done it again if I needed it with my other little guy.  It's up to you, see what baby does this next week and go from there.  Good luck.

I was due to have the aversion.  As I was walking into the clinic the baby decided to flip. I was 37 wks and will never forget the feeling.
