burn

burn

alright i feel absolutely awful. i mean beyond awful. i feel horrible. i was cooking dinner tonight and brett was crying for me. so i was holding him and his foot must have hit the side of the stove while i was putting spaghetti in the pot. he cried for a minute and stopped. i checked out his feet and legs where he could have bumped and nothing. even when i touched his feet and legs he didn't cry. so later we put the boys to bed and of course they woke up because he went potty. well while i was changing brett's diaper i saw a HUGE blister on the side of his foot. even while i touched it no crying. (it looks like a typical burn if you touch something hot) greg and i put a&d ointment on it and a band aid.

should it be ok with that? or should we break the blister? it doesn't look bad enough to go to the er or the doctor but i just feel horrible since i know it's my fault. i know shouldn't have been holding him while i was cooking but the poor dear was crying for mum mum. oh god i'm a bad mom!!!

Don't break the blister.  Just keep it in a protective ointment and covered with the Band-Aid.  I guess that is a good example of why they say not to cook while holding a baby.  It probably saved you (and people reading too) from some worse experience, obviously you'll never do it again.

dont break the blister!!  that can let infection in... the blister will help to prevent scaring too.. also you should leave it uncovered... so let it just breath....

don't beat yourself up about it.. i know it is hard.  he will be fine.. I know we don't like to see our little ones in pain... but he will be fine

i just feel horrible about it! i NEVER hold them while cooking but he just wouldn't stop crying and going mum mum. i never thought in a million years his foot would bump the stove. i did put a sock over top of his foot with the band aid (he has a tendancy to pull the band aids off....) so i'm hoping it's better in the morning. it doesn't seem to hurt like i said. he was giggling and laughing while we put the a&d on his foot. *sigh* i still feel like a terrible mother. something i KNOW i shouldn't have done....and i did it. GAH! i'm so mad at myself.

Never break the blister!!  It is okay, we are all human :0)  Don't be too upset, he will be good as new in no time!

If you break the blister it will most likely get infected. Most blisters do end up popping by themselves but never force it. A bandaid might not be the best thing though because it holds in moisture and heat and that can cause pain for him. I'm not sure, there are different things to use on different burns aqnd I really can't remember a one but I'm sure you can look up online about that if you don't already know. Just don't try to cover it with anything that will hold in heat and moisture.

Dh burnt himself recently on a barbeque, and his doc (who he was in to see the next day for something else) told him just to put Neosporin on it and keep it covered with a Bandaid.  That is what we had done anyway, so it was nice to hear.  I think the keeping-it-covered part had to do with not popping the blisters prematurely by abrading them or knocking them against something (thus providing the road for infection that everyone is mentioning).

well my mom took a look at brett's foot today and said that i was over reacting. lol. yeah it's a first degree burn but it's not bad. i just have to keep neosporin or a&d ointment on it and keep it covered. it actually broke today so i've been keep the ointment and bandaid on it.

you need to make sure it is cool before you put ointment and a band aid on.  You can say anything you want about what a doctor told you to do at a certain point.  If a kid gets burned and you put ointment on it and a bandaid right away it is going to keep "cooking" and the burn will get worse!!  Kind of like when you are steaming something.  You cant just turn the stove off, you have to take the lid off too or it will keep it hot and will keep steaming.
Now that it is cool, you are good to put the ointment and band aid on, just wanted to clairfy for people reading in the future.
