It would be a good idea to call your pediatrician about it.

I had problems similar to this with my first one.  It is so scary, I know.  I would mention it to your pediatrician.  If I can remember right, in my son's case, he was spitting up but it was like getting caught in his throat and it would cause him to choke a little.

Brody has done that before, too. He is sleeping and then awakes screaming and trying to catch his breath and acts like he's choking. He did it a few times and I asked the pediatrician. She thought it was reflux. I don't know if that is what it was but he doesn't do it anymore. She put him on Zantac but he hated it and would refuse to swallow when we gave it to him. It became such a battle that we quit giving it.

You could get a humidifier too but I would call your doc. It is possible that he has asthma. My son did the same thing and it turned out he had "infant asthma" which cleared up as he became a toddler. Also, lay your baby on his side which might help him get a breath better. Do call the doc, though, better that they check him out and make sure everything is ok which will give you peace of mind too.

Max does it too. I get so scared because he chokes so bad! Our ped put him on Zantac yesterday. He makes a reeeally nasty face when I give it to him, so I'm hoping he doesn't refuse to take it! I would definitely call your doc!

My son Ryan had the same problem and come to find out he had acid reflux.  He would choke and gag all the time, mostly after a meal.  It was the worst.  The Dr. put him on prevcid (sp).  About a week went by and he was a different baby.  Maybe that is whats wrong but it could be many things. Zantac has a bad taste and Prevcid tasted like strawberries and my son loves it.  Zantac did not work with my son.  It was like Ryan was trying to throw up

How old is your baby?  I had similar things happen with my daughter when she was a newborn - I called and took her in over and over again and they said it was something called periodic breathing.  Then when they do breathe it sounds funny.  Whatever...  So what they told me was it was ok for my baby not to breathe for long periods of time.  I got the angelcare movement sensor monitor which is by far the best invention EVER and I cant believe someone didn't come out with it sooner.  Get it - this will help you sleep at night.

As for the baby - they may say it is normal or will diagnose him/her with reflux.  They did this to my baby and after giving her Zantac for a couple weeks I stopped.  I felt like they were too quick with the drugs.  She never makes these sounds anymore I think it is something they outgrow.

Rubyolivia - ask your pharmacy to put flavor in the Zantac - it helps it worked for my daughter when I gave her it.  I taste all her meds and that one was gross.

Try a humidifier..as well as call the doc. Maybe he has a cold?

I agree with the humidifier idea. It could be something small but you never know, so you wanna make sure. I'd take him to the emergency room just because i'm a first time mom and i know anything like that would scare me! Best of luck =]

We had the same thing too.  First baby choked on vomit at daycare, he had to be rushed by ambulance as he was not repsonding well.  Very awful experience, we had to keep him elevated.  Second baby has bad reflux, meds helped, but he also gags and chokes when he's sick and his airway is reactive.  First time it happened we went in ASAP that morning to the ped and had him checked, he was diagnosed with RSV, happened with the bronchitis and also the pneumonia.  Call the nurse and tell her what's going on.  You can never be too careful with breathing.  Also, the Zantac is minty, but it's to help soothe the belly.  You may be able to have it flavored, but it will still have some of hte funky mint flavor.  We use Prevacid and Reglan (which is icky too).  Good luck and I hope baby feels better soon.
