choosing a formula

choosing a formula

I'll soon be switching to formula and I'm trying to decide what brand to use.  What brand are you using and how did you choose it?  Did you dr recommend it? What it the brand you go free in the mail so you just went with it? Is it the brand they gave you at the hospital? Recommended by a friend/family member?

Thanks, Hannah

i used enfamil lipil with iron. my pediatrician reccommended it at the hospital when edward was born. i would put a call in to your doctor and get theor reccommendation too. enfamil was always fine for edward but i've heard instances where finding the right formula is a trial and error thing. you may try one and it doesn't agree with your little. gives them gas, makes them constipated, etc. so you may have to try more than one. they also have generic brands of formula that are just as good as the high-priced name brand stuff, so look into that too. good luck!

I have 5 kids and used Enfamil with the first 4.  With this last one, I am using Similac Advanced.  It is a little more expensive, but this is the healthiest baby I have ever had.  It could be a coincidence, but if I have another one, I will use the Similac again.  I have a new doctor and she would give me large samples everytime I would go with the baby.  She also strongly recommended it for at least the first 6 months.  I only have 2 1/2 more to go.  Yay!!!!  I am looking forward to her being able to drink whole milk!!!

we use enfamil A+...our pediatrician is REALLy anal about moms breastfeeding however if you don't BF'd you should be using Enfamil A+ for your baby because it is the closest thing to breast milk and is #1 reccomended by peds...

Now on another note..that was the first formula our ds had..i kinda wish i would have bf'd in a way...hopefully we have another one later on and i will try...but ds is good on enfamil A+ but ive heard of some children having difficulty...here it is the most expensive formula there is and we buy it by the can to mix...the powder stuff goes for 26.97 the cheapest at walmart...:S when your baby has anywhere from 4-6 a month it costs alot but its a really good one...I dont know anything about any other formulas..however...I read alot on enfamil A+ and before ds was born we had decided either similac or enfamil...

this link also gave me good info..  http://www.meadjohnson.ca/en/products/formulas_1faq.html

After 5 mos of Bfing dd I switched to Enfamil.  I think they are all competitiors of eachother and are relatively similar.

DD didn't do well on any of the milk based formulas so we went with soy based.  We used Good Start.

My baby is mostly breastfed, but I do give him some formula too. My Dr. recomended Similac Advance, and I really like it. I tried some Enfamil first, and I think it REEKS and is an ugly tannish color. Similac is a pretty white color and does not stink.
And I noticed someone up above made the comment their baby has been very healthy on Similac Advance--I have noticed this with my baby too---he has been VERY healthy. Not so much as a sniffle and he is 6 and 1/2 months! All through the winter, too!

Sometimes I buy the Costco Brand which is supposed to be just like Similac, and I don't notice any difference. It's a lot cheaper.

I tried Enfamil with DD and it made her spit up a lot and constipated. I LOVE Good Start!! It's got "comfort proteins" and she did not spit up at all when we started it. The only bad thing about formula is every baby is different and sometimes it's just trial and error.

Good luck!

i also love Good Start. it's not foamy like similac powder and smells better. dd does very well on it. when i first tried formula, she had some very rough nights with the enfamil and similac.

hannah - what formula did you end up deciding on?  I'm curious as we're facing the same concern since I won't be breastfeeding :-(((.  There are so many, many choices! - jen

I like Enfamil. I use Enfamil Gentlease because my daughter had some trouble with reflux. The pediatrcian started her on this.
