claritin during pregnancy

by Terri61376, Jun 19, 2007 12:00AM
I called my doctor because I have really bad allergies and he suggested that claitin is safe for pregnancy...but there are different types of it...I am asuming that the original strength is what he meant

what do ya think...I know I am not supposed to take a decongestant

For a time the Dr. had me on Claritan D.  I am now switched to Zyrtech because I do not need the decongestant anymore and Zyrtech helps me more than Claritan.  Both meds are on what they call the B list.  A list, you cannot take.  B list is okay and C list is even better.

I take it now and did with my first pregnancy. I did take  the on for allergy and congestion. It's safe.

My doctor would not let me take Claritin even though that is what I normally used he said that new documents showed an increase of the baby's heart rate while taking claritin. The doc could be wrong but I would ask your dr about this. He put me on Zyrtec.

Claritin is a category B.  In response to another comment however, Category A is the safest with B usually being safe as well.  Category C or below is generally considered risky and you should discuss with your physician wether the benefit outweighs the risks.
