concerned about empty gestational sac at 8 weeks

by alohamom, Jun 27, 2006 12:00AM
I went for my first prenatal visit yesterday and the doctor did an ultrasound, both abdominal and transvaginal.  I sould be 8 weeks and 5 days gestational. I know for a FACT that this is how far along I shold be. My last period began on 4/26 and I went out of town on May 10 for 2weeks (no sex during that time). I took a positive pregnancy test on May 26.  However, the doctor saw a gestational sac without a yolk or fetal poles yesterday. According to the ultrasound and size of the sac, I should only be 5weeks and 5 days.  I am very concerned as to how this is possible. I am going back in 48 hours to have the Hcg levels tested again.  Since I know for certain how far along I should be, does this mean that I have a blighted ovum, or have miscarried.  Both my mother and I also have a tilted uterus, but this was not mentioned yesterday at my doctor's visit.  I have had no cramping or spotting and feel totally normal.  I did have breast sorness in the beginning, but not much now. I've had no nausea, but have gained about 7 pounds. Please respond if you have had similar experiences because I don't know how I'm going to get through the next 2 days without knowing.

I'm sorry you're going through this waiting period. I went through the same thing.
It could be a m/c, you mentioned no bleeding, right? That's a good sign. I can't say 100% it's a m/c but checking your hcg level is a sure indication, unfortunately you'll have to wait til then.
Don't give up hope yet.

With the majority of u/s at 8 weeks a heartbeat should be clearly visible. It may be a ms or a blighted ovum and once the blood tests are back you will have more answers. I am truly sorry that you are going through this.

At 8.5 weeks, they should be able to see something on the u/s, especially the vaginal u/s. I had no bleeding or cramping with my blighted ovum, which was discovered when I was 12 weeks along. I know that waiting and not knowing is hard, but that's really all you can do. Sorry that you're going through this.

Was 12 weeks when you had your first u/s? I am just curious as that seems kind of late.

I just wanted to share with you that a friend of mine when in when she was 9 wks pg and they heard no h/b...anyway long story short she just had her little girl 2 weeks ago.
Until you find out about your hcg levels you won't know for sure.
The waiting is the worst...

I know that with my first baby I only got one ultrasound because that is all my insurance would pay for, plus there was no need for any other because I was measuring properly (as far as the size of my stomach) and they could hear the heartbeat everytime they looked for it. The only reason why I am going to have at least 3 for this pregnancy is because I have had 2 miscarriages in a row.

One more thing, the ultrasound that I had with my first Pregnancy was at 18 weeks to determine the sex of the baby and to check out all of the body parts.

I had always assumed you had an early one for dates and then a 20 week one for size and baby's sex. Then again if the pesky ins only allows the one I can understand how it would not be till later in the pregnancy.

It was my first u/s because of how my appointments fell. With a pregnancy that is progressing normally, my doctor will do the first u/s after 8 weeks (8 wks 1 day+). I had an appointment and exam with him right at 8 wks, and everything seemed fine, so he scheduled me to come back 4 weeks later. That's when they started looking for the HB. With my second pregnancy, he did an u/s the first day I saw him, since I had previously had the blighted ovum. The second one turned out to be ectopic, so I guess it's good he was monitoring me so closely.

I had a friend who had 3 for her first pregnancy because that is what her insurance paid for. With my first, it didn't really think about having more than one ultrasound becaue I thought that was all that was needed. Of course,I think differently now because of everything that has happened.

Wow, it's so hard not to know, just be prepared either way.  I know with my first pregnancy I had an ultrasound done at 6 weeks 2 days, only because I had had heavy bleeding, and we were able to see the baby and heartbeat.  Usually my Dr. will not see you till 12 weeks and then will only do an early ultrasound if they can't find the heartbeat.  She told me the reason is that if the dates are off there is lots more stress waiting to see the baby, plus insurance.  I went in at 11 weeks for bleeding and cramping this last time and that's when they discovered my blighted ovum.  It would've been nicer to know earlier, but all Dr.'s are different.  I hope you are doing well and take care.

Hi I am having the same problem right now.  I am 7 weeks and 3 days and today I did a transvag ultrasound and only an elongated sac was there.  Empty.  It was very heart breaking to see this.  The tech said that from what she sees its not a viable pregnancy.  I am going to see the doc tomorrow and I want blood tests done.  Is there any hope for me?  I had some symptons of pregnancy early on (4 weeks) - a bit of nausea and breat tenderness but after a week or so they disappeared.  I havent been told I have a blighted ovum but everything points to one.

I just got the results from my hcg levels. Monday they were 20,200, and Wednesday they were only 20,300. The number are good but not rising. I go for another u/s next Mon. I don't know how I'm going to make it through the weekend. I'm trying to have some hope, but things don't look good. I still don't have any bleeding and feel fine. I'm scared about what will happen next, m/c or d and c? I'm praying for a miracle, but may have to say goodbye to my angel baby next week. Please send prayers.

I am sorry you are going through this too. I remember that sick feeling in my stomach while waiting to find out what is going to happen. It is horrible. I am thinking of you too.
