constant engorgement, just recovering from mastitis

by apple_blossom, Jun 10, 2007 12:00AM
DS is 3 months now and I just finished my run of antibiotics for mastitis (who knew you could feel so terrible so quickly!) but now after battling so long to have enough milk, I'm constantly full. And even an hour after a thorough feeding, I´m hurting again. I know pumping will only increase my supply, but I don´t want to end up with mastitis again. What can I do?

I'd pump anyway, and freeze it.  Then slowly extend the time between pumping and /or feedings, so you slowly pump less.  It's useful to have the milk frozen, and that way you protect yourself from mastitis.  Good luck!

And I know this sounds crazy, but it is an old midwives' trick and it works great for engorgement...cabbage leaves....they hae an enzyme that helps and they feel cool on sore breasts.

(and you can make cole slaw when you are done, lol)

Hang in there, it will get better soon.
