At 42, I was offered a CVS.  They use a needle to take a sample of the placenta.  My perinatal specialist did the test transabdominally, not transcervically, as it is typically done.  The reason he did it that way was because he said that he believed that the incidents of infection resulting from this test are associated with the inability to sterilize the cervix, so going through the abdomen avoids this issue.  However, the placenta needs to be positioned in front in order for the doctor to access it transabdominally, but mine was not accessible, so I waited another eight weeks and had an amniocentesis.
