discomfort after methotrexate

by AM Stauss, Dec 18, 2005 12:00AM
Hi.

I was treated with Methotrexate for an early ectopic 1 1/2 weeks ago, my HcG has started to drop.  However, the last two days I have started to feel discomfort in my lower abdomen and to day  I feel dizzy as well.  I just went in for another blood test as required after my treatment but, I feel concerned.

You will feel this way only for a few days. I was given methotrexate in August for possible eptopic. My levels took almost 3 weeks to drop. I also suffered from a little more hair loss when I brushed my hair. I just started to try again last month. I am also very scared it will happen again. Did you have surgery as well? Was this your first pregnancy? How far along were you? Any more questions feel free to ask. Take care.

Yes- the methotrexate can cause abdominal pain. It felt like REALLY bad gas pains to me. It will gradually get better. As long as your hcg levels are going down, you'll be okay. I also had some back pain and couldn't help but wonder what the stuff could be doing to my liver. It will get better, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear about your ectopic. I got pg with Clomid and had to have metho @ 6wks as that was the first time it was confirmed to be in the tube. 2wks later I had severe constant pain, nausea and dizzyness. I ended up in the ER where unfortunately they took out that tube as it ruptured and bleeding won't stop, tube was stuck to bowels. Please see that the Dr. examin you well and do ultrasound. My Dr told me that for some pg 1 dose of metho is ok but not for all, it may not even work. So it is very critical you follow up if you are having any pain, or nausea or dizzyness. Hope things go well with you.

Just to clarify- if the pain doesn't get better, be sure to tell your dr. If they are monitoring your hcg levels and they're dropping, then the pain is probably a side effect of the shot. It took 5 weeks before my levels went down to 0, and it seems like I had abdominal discomfort for at least a couple of weeks.

Check with your dr. I believe the methotrexate is out of your system fairly quickly, but your hcg has to get back down to 0. That took 5 weeks for me. I was ready to start ttc after that, but my dr. scheduled an hsg test to check my tubes, so I had to wait another month.

I'm sorry that you and I are going through the same thing.  I had my methotrexate 8 days ago and about 24 hours after the shots I became very sick.  I was throwing up and cramping really badly.  I started to get very light headed and ended up in the emergency room b/c I was afraid my tube had ruptured.  However, the doctors told me that with metho. the side effects can mimick a ruptured tube.  I hope you start to feel better soon.
