ectopic pregnancy treatment

ectopic pregnancy treatment

I was given a methotrexate injection a couple of days ago for an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. I have since been doing some research and found that it is unlikely that this treatment will work since my hcg levels were >87,000 at the time. I had been checked by ultrasound several times before, but they could not detect the pregnancy (even when my levels were >60000)  How is it possible that with such high levels, there was no visible pregnancy in the uterus or tubes? I'm really worried now because there is such a great chance of my tube rupturing still and also that the treatment won't work with such high hormone levels. I was also unaware at the time I got the shot that it takes more than a month to end the pregancy this way - even if it does work. would it be safer for me to just have the surgery? I'm approx. 8-9 weeks along now, though it must be rather small for the gestational age, since they could not find it until 2 days ago. I cannot be on bedrest for a month. I see the doc tomorrow for the day-4 levels to be drawn but I would like to hear another opinion an the situation.

I had 3 methotrexate injections back in '06.My levels were high also. And instead of them going down they kept on getting higher.Thats why I got 3 shots. My pregnancy was never found also.I was 8 wks along & after almost a month I started bleeding & my levels went down.I don't know about you,but with the metho I was exhausted.I was told I could not be out in the sun,but had to be going every 4 days to get blood drawn.I broke out in blisters alover my body. And once I did start bleeding it was like after labor.I would recomened taking it easy if not bed rest.
Now about the surgery..just wait & see how the methotrexate works. If fetus was not found than your tube is not likely to rupture.I was told to go to the ER if I had dizziness, shoulder pain, hip pain or passing out.If methotrexate doesn't work & levels continue to go up,then surgery will be an option.Good luck & sorry about the ectopic.

Wow, your levels are high! I think mine were around 5000-6000 when I got the shot, they increased to close to 8000 after the shot, and then started decreasing. My EP was never located either. I later had laparoscopy which indicated the pregnancy was in my left tube, but I didn't know that until then. I was back at work a few days after Methotrexate, and it the recovery time was more for the D&C that I had right before the shot. Has your doctor ruled out a molar pregnancy?
