empty sac

hi can anyone help. my sister is 44 and two weeks ago she did a test which came back positive. she was spotting before she did it and its still on and off but no pain. she had a scan that same week but they found a sac but no baby. they said she may have got her dates wrong and it was too early to see anything.she went for a second scan last friday but again no baby so they said it looked like there was no baby and if she did not miscarry she would have to go in and have it removed. they took her blood to test her levels which had gone up  more than they thought to 48.000. she has another scan on thursday.could there still be a baby has this happened to anyone else. any help would be most welcome.

It sounds very concerning.  The next ultrasound should give the final answer as to what is going on.

it depends on how far along she is at 4 weeks i had an ultrasound and they saw a sac but no baby we later found out i just wasnt far enough to see it
