by Louise288, Jun 24, 2009 01:48AM
hello,
i am 20  years old had my 12 week ultrasound and it came back as high risk to extra chromosones 13/18 (edwards and patau syndrome) it was 1 in 228 chance and for my age itshould be 1 in 2000 i was just wondering what are the chances of  it actually being correct and is it rare for a 20 year old to have a baby with extra chromosones 13/18?

i am really scared  please help

It is rare but not impossible. Do you plan to have more testing or CVS or amnio done? What did they tell you to do about follow up? I'm sorry you got this news and hope it is just a fluke, which is possible. Good luck and keep us posted.

I agree nothing is impossible but stay optimistic.  Have you seen any genetic specialist yet?  There is still a good chance everything is fine.

Most genetic disorders are hereditary. Is there any family history (on either side, yours or the father's side) of any genetic disorders?

Having a 1 in 228 chance, if I do the math correctly, means you have a .004% chance of having a baby with one of those disorders.

Keep your chin up, sweetie!

No one can make that decision for you. I know it is hard but you need to weigh the options yourself and decide what the best route to take is. Have you talked to your family or anyone else about this?
