extreme heartburn

please tell me someone out there has a remedy, aside of tums for extreme heartburn. i have it everyday, all day. im 31w preggo with ds, and the only thing ive been able to take has been tums. the directions say chew 2 tabs twice a day. how???? thats not enough, and i dont want to take a dosage not recommended. i even wake up in the middle of the night from it. this is too much for me. i have a 6yo dd, and never experienced this while pregnant with her. any advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance!

I've had bad heartburn my entire pg.  Prilosec works for me.  You take it everyday whether you feel the heartburn or not.  If you take it everyday, you won't even experience the heartburn.  The direction say only to take for 14 days but my dr said it okay to take as long as you need to.  The 14 is so people with ulcers don't take it instead of getting medical attention.

Sorry you're going through this.  I had a terrible h/b with DD and starting to have it with this pregnancy as well.  I took TUMS as well and that was the ONLY thing that helped me.  I hope you get good suggestions and that you're feeling better soon.  I know that when DD dropped, I felt so much better (nothing was pushing my stomach up anymore:)

I had it when I was pregnant also, it was horrible.  I would wake up in the middle of the night with acid in my mouth.  My dr finally gave me a prescription for it, and it worked wonders.  I would put a call in to your dr tomorrow and ask for something stronger than tums.  Good luck!!!!

tanker chic: i specifically asked my dr can i take prilosec otc, and she said NO. i was tempted to do it anyway, but was to afraid. i have some samples here maybe tomorrow i'll try one before i go to work. at this point im desperate.

me2mom: tums does the job for me, but not for long. it works for about a few hours or so.

babywillow: omg.. the same thing happens to me in the middle of the night. what medication did your dr prescribe for you ?

I was also afraid to try anything that was not approved by my dr.  She would only approve TUMS.  I agree that it doesn't help for very long :((

That is really strange, because it was my dr who told me to take Prilosec.  She even gave me a sheet of meds and it is on the sheet.  It has worked WONDERS for me.  good luck with whatever you try.

Girl I feel your pain!!!  I'm only 10w5d and my heartburn started at 6 weeks!!  My dr told me to take Pepcid AC (10mg) and it has worked wonders.  I would take it!!  You'll be so glad you did.  Good luck!

I have the same problem and told my doctor if she didn't help me I was going to die.  I am now taking 150mg Zantac every other day and chewable Mylanta on the days I don't take the Zantac.  It works awesome.  A bit still squeeks through, but not nearly what I was dealing with.

Hi! Ask your dr. if you can take Gaviscon liquid (otc) and also I would ask if you can take more that two tums at a time, I would think you would be able to take four at a time but of course I'm not an MD. I hope this helps some and I will pray that you get some relief, I know how bad it can be! Good luck!

i am  40 weeks preggo and am still suffering from terrible heartbur altho everytwhere it says when baby drops heartburn shud stop...my midwife gave me Ivax peptac liquid and dat kinda helps...not much tho....also having cold milk helps...u can ask ur doc to give something for it!
