failed glucose screening

failed glucose screening

Hi there,

I just found out I flunked the one hour glucose test and now thurs I have to do the three hour test which sounds a lot more involved (like hanging out in the dr's office for 3 hours while they draw my blood every hour) Has anyone failed the first and passed the second?

I hear there is a high rate of failed on the hour and then things are fine on the second test. Is this true? I am really surprised that my numbers were high and dont know what causes this. I dont want to google this because every time I google something I freak out so Im going to try and not do it.

Any experinces or advice to bring down my glucose levels between now and thurs (if its possible) would be really great to hear. This is my first pregnancy, Im 34, extremely active, 29 wks, and completely in the dark about this whole deal.

you will probably get tons of posts on this.  A bunch of people failed the first and passed the second, including myself.  as odd as it sounds, it is not a matter of lowering your glucose in those days.  it is a matter of making sure you eat enough sugar for your body to process it correctly.  my doctor said to eat carbs in the days before and she even said to eat a king size snickers bar two days before the test.  this one is actually ok to google.  i would google something like "what to eat before 3 hour glucose test".  it will tell you the exact mg of carbs you should eat each day and some other things to eat to make sure your body is processing sugar correctly.  this one is really important that you fast before.   i also found it helpful to drink water during the test.  it will not effect the results in a way that you would get a false negative.  the drink it double the dose of the last in the same size container.  be prepared...baby is going to get really active and feel like it is going to bust right through your skin!  take some magazines and hope that your lab has lazy boys like mine did.  it was actually really relaxing to have that time to myself and not be at work or feel like i had to be cleaning.  it is the one time in my life that i literally had nothing to do but sit.  try not to worry too much about it.  it is a really common thing.

Honestly If you have gestational diabetes nothing you do will bring your blood sugar down by the next test. It's going to show up on the test if it's there. I've heard of a lot of women who fail the 1hr but pass the 3hr. I also know some women who failed both beautifully. If you do have it the best bet besides the medicine will be to change your diet. Cut out carbs and sugar as much as possible. No pasta or bread. Meat, eggs, and cheese are the best things to eat. Water is great to drink. You can add splenda to things. From my understanding Splenda is perfectly fine during pregnancy. I eat these ice cream bars with splenda in them and they are sooo good. You can't even tell a difference. Many women develop GD. It's not the end of the world, but it does mean your world changes for a little bit.

Just to clarify...she is saying cut out that stuff if you have GD  do not cut them out now or you have a much higher rate of failing the test because your body will not handle that amount of glucose you are putting in it.

i failed the 1 hr but passed the 3 hr. i ate normally before. i didn't want to risk hiding a problem that may be there and affect me or the baby.
