feeding your one year old

by BEANIBEAR1967, Jan 01, 2006 12:00AM
What is everyone feeding there one year old-ie--breakfast lunch dinner--I work days my dh works nites--so home cooking is few and far between.  We have been giving him gerber stage 3 foods and he is doing well. At last wellcheck dec 15th he weighed 29 lbs(healthy not fat)and 32 inches long--he has been on regular milk since 11 mo(ok'd by pediatrician)ped said ok to start regular food. But I need quick and easy ideas--dh is not much for cooking and he is with ds for breakfast and lunch.
Also, occasionally ds likes to gag himself(three fingers down the throat) is this normal? He already has eight teeth four on top and four on bottom all in front. Thank you for your input.

Hi...I have been wracking my brain trying to come up with new ideas for my one year old, too.  I work, too, and a lot of the time, we just don't have a "home cooked meal." Some things we have tried with success:  frozen whole wheat pancakes, cottage cheese, chopped up hot dogs (I know, yuk, but he really likes them), applesauce, Yo-Baby yogurt (loves it!), chopped up spaghetti with tomatoes and meat, canned green beans, carrots, peas (softer than frozen), chopped up veggie-nuggets (Chik-nuggets), whole wheat bread with cheese slices, frozen waffles, canned chicken with chopped pasta and vegetables, Dole fruit cups (peaches or pears), macaroni and cheese, cream of wheat (made with whole milk), small bites of whatever we are eating...he loves to take his own bites,  mashed potatoes, cheerios or cereal puffs.  I feel like he gets quite a variety, but worry that he doesn't get enough nutrients.  I still add a small amount of NextStep formula for 9-24 month olds to his milk...just to add some nutrient insurance.  I hope this helps.  Also, my son was very fond of gagging himself for a while, too.  It is very trying, because sometimes they gag until they vomit, but it passes.  I really think he liked getting a reaction from us, and its weird, but I think he liked the gagging sound, too, because he will still sometimes make the sound alone, and then laugh.  Good luck!

I have a 14 month old and this is what he normally eats-

breakfast:
pop tart
fruit
shares cereal with me
shares bagel with cream-cheese w/me
eggs with cheese
susage
ham
bacon
toast with peanut butter
egg and cheese bisquit
pancakes

lunch:
fish sticks
chicken nuggest
apples
taco
mac & cheese
almost any veggie
baked potato
hamburger or hot dog
peanut butter and jelly
pasta and meatballs

dinner:
dinner is always whatever i make and i noramlly make a big dinner... he pretty much eats everything and has never really ate baby food. he started on solids at 9 months and went right to table foods that he could pick up with his fingers or i mushed up. My first son was on baby food unitl he was about 15 months and started on table food around 11 months along with it. he was totally off baby food by 15 months though. My first also had breast milk until he was 23 months and my 14 months old is nursing about 3 times a day.

Hope this helps!

I HAVE A EIGHT AND A HALF MONTH OLD THAT EATS TABLE FOODS. SIMPLE ONES. HE HAS NEVER REALLY LIKES JARRED BABY FOOD AND HE IS DOING REALLY WELL EATING BASICALLY WHAT WE DO. YOU JUST HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WITH STUFF THAT CAUSES ALLERGIES. HE IS STILL ON HIS FORMULA THOUGH.

Just be sure to get plenty of fruits and vegies.  Most children don't get enough fruits and vegies.  Strawberries are great.  I got all of my kids eating raw vegies early that way they would like them.  We do salads and I chop up cucumbers and I shred the carrots so they are easier for them to eat.  I like to cut the grapes in half just to ensure they dont get choked.  My girls really like asparagus too.  They think it is cool to eat green sticks.

my dd likes oatmeal.  i use the microwavable kind and she just gobbles it up, you can also get fruit cups i think most of the canned fruit companies make the fruit cups to-go now.  she also loves PB&J.  right now she is into "the taste test"  she sticks all food in her mouth then takes it out to look at it then decides if it will go back in her mouth or not.
oh as for snacks, my dd LOVES those stars they have now....you can get them in different veggie flavors or fruit....there just little puffs that melt in their mouth....they kind of taste like cereal to me,  the sweet potatoe ones are good.

I have an 8 1/2 month old that is still on stage 2 foods.  He eats biter biscuits occasionally.  He gets gagged on food until he vomits.  He doesnt stick his fingers in his mouth, he just gags and throws up.  I give him formula and stage 2 foods, and I also mix up cereal (rice, oatmeal, grains) for him to eat.  I finally decided he would eat table food when he was ready.  I quit stressing myself out.  He is growing fine.  31 inches and 21.5 pounds.  The doctor says he is fine.

At one year of age they can eat about anything you eat. I wouldn't advise giving them cut up steak or anything like that until he has more back teeth and is able to chew or any kind of salad. But mine ate just about everything I did. His favorite was peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch. I would just rip it apart into little pieces he could grab and he loooooved it. And then feeding him fruit with breakfast and luch and veggies with dinner just to make sure he got all of his nutrients he needed. And the fingers down the throat is normal I had the same problem. Then when he could eat with a spoon, that went down the throat to. Many times his food has came back up. But eventually he learned lol!! I think what you're feeding him now is good, and everything these other ladies have listed is everything I have fed mine! Good luck to ya!
