Oh ya, and I had my first prenatal at  12 weeks. Is this a private practice that you are going to? For my previous pregnancy I went to an OB within a womens hospital network that was very structured with quite a few routine requirements. Now I am going to a private practice office where the doctor makes the rules.  That could be the difference. Oh wait , but you said that he gave your sister more instruction than you and that was why you feel a bit concerned. Hmmm..

Congrats on hearing the h/b!!! Isn't is amazing?

I'm glad to hear that everything is going great!  I didn't get my first prenatal appointment until 14 weeks, so you're lucky.  I hope you have a healthy pregnancy and keep us updated on everything!

Hi, hon,

Great news about Little 174!  I'd give the doctor one more appointment, but after that wouldn't hesitate to find another if things don't look a little more solicitous.  Write everything down you want to know, including asking why you didn't get a list of approved meds and nobody mentioned prenatals.  There's nothing wrong with holding a doctor's office up to a certain standard.  The doc doesn't want his quality control system to slip any more than you want to get ho-hum care.

Maybe it wouldn't be out of the question or considered rude if you ask to set up a prenatal consultation with a nurse from the office to go over some of the minor details like which meds are safe to take and other topics similar to that.  I know my midwife's office works that way, they schedule your first prenatal appointment with the nurse to go over history, paperwork/pamplets, determine due date, order labs, etc.  A few days later you meet up with the midwife to go over the lab results, have the us and discuss whatever.  Good luck!

thanks, maybe he went through my records and saw from my last appt (pap a few months ago) that i was already taking them. i will give them another try, the thought of having to find another isnt what i want to do right now. i know that their nurse practioner/midwife just moved and they are very very busy, but that shouldnt be my fault. yes annie little 174 lol. already a wild child!! why is it when its late and i have been yawning for hours and i get a chance to go to bed, i dont go to sleep!!! my legs get restless for a bit. oh and with my numbness in my arms and legs, they might send me to physical therapy. starting this pg off with a bang lol. annie i kinda hope for another boy, they are just so sweet. my son will still kiss me, and when we are shopping he will put his arm around mine. so darn sweet its wonderful!!!!  but he is going to be 9 in july, lets see what happens then lol. did you go back to work? part time from home? its sure hard to leave those little angels isnt it?

Woooo Hoooo! Congrats! I am soooo happy everything is going good and a great hb! I think the dr just over looked the other or someone dropped the ball. My OB had a required "class" before you could go to your 1st visit. We filled out all the paperwork(he was already my dr)for hopsital, epidural, core blood banking, tests that were optional if you wanted them, tests that were manditory, safe sheet, etc. I thought it was a pia before I went. It really streamlined everything and there were like 50 women there so everyone asked questions. If you forgot, chances are someone else asked. Again, Yipppee on the great visit! :)

SIGH....I just posted this big long post to you and it disappeared! So here goes again...

I'm glad your appt. went so well! Sounds like "babykitty" is doing great! lol

As for the doc....I switched docs at 14 weeks (I hated my original doc's office staff when it came to me calling them about any pregnancy related....total b*tches) My original doc (who had my records from age 16 and up since I'd been going there for paps etc) asked about every health issue, medical record, etc. from me, covered safe medications and practices, covered what would be covered at each appt, and made sure that I was switched to a prescription prenatal since my pre-pregnancy OTC's had only 800 mcg of folic acid and they recommend 1000mg. Second doctor's office......same routine.....and they had all the records from the first doc's office.

So I would think that regardless of whether you have been going there or not and whether it's your first child he would still be a little more thorough with you! I would call the office and speak with a nurse and explain to her that you didn't really do any of this and you were wondering if you could have some sort of consult with her (or another nurse). If the office staff is rude......leave. No matter how good the doctor is....you deal with his staff more than him anyhow. (EX: 14 weeks....I'm spotting for the 3rd day in a row. I called the office and the receptionist says "what is it exactly that you'd like US to do for YOU?" I was speechless. I hung up on her. Then called back and said, "Fax my records and cross me off your list as a patient")

Sorry........I can't shut up! Good luck with the doc and again congrats on a  healthy baby! :)

WOW, you just had your first prenatal?? Guess he is busy! I have one today 6/1, and it will be my 4th appt. so far and I am 13 weeks...I heard my baby on doppler at 9 1/2 weeks..enough about me, that is terrific! I love my midwifes, but sometimes they are just so busy w/ all they do at the office, plus the babies they have to deliver at the hospital. Sometimes they are very informative and take the time to answer all my questions and I am in there for 35 min+. Other times, when it is very busy, They rush me in and out in like 10. In fact, my first prenatal was cut short because there was an emergency at the hospital w/ another one of her patients who was in labor. They did not even charge me for the full visit! Maybe he was just very busy that day, but if you like him and trust him, I see no need to switch, unless you feel it nessecary. Sounds like he has done great things for your sis.  SO glad to hear things went well, I'll let you know how mt appt. goes today!~bops   :)

I'm in the same boat with my docotor. He is so laid back, yet he is very experienced and was auctually reccomended to me by 2 different people. His casual attitued makes me a bit uncomfortable though. Maybe he just assumes that I already know all the small details since this is my  2nd pregnancy. He didn't even ask what was in my vitamin.

you know i was sitting here thinking about my appt, my dr never reminded me or asked if i was taking my prenatals. guess he figured i knew! my sis (we have the same dr) was given a sheet of meds safe to take, i wasnt. in fact he really didnt spend much time with me, i had to tell him about my previous pregnancy, labor and birth. maybe i jumped the gun and told him before he could ask, but  my dr i had with my son was very informative and took him time. should i call to complain? should i look elsewhere? i know he is a great dr, he has performed surgeries on my sis , endo, an overy removal, and delivery of one of her kids. i just dont want to be rushed and anything be forgotten. what are your opinions? i know if i was asked this i would probably say go elsewhere, but im not sure.

congratulations!!! 174 is very good indeed. one of my beans was there and everytime i see them on ultrasound they look like they are trying to make a prison break out my belly button. maybe you'll have a very active baby too. :)

as far as the doctor....one more chance..then that's it. at least that's how i would handle it. you have too much to worry about without wondering if you are just a number. i do recommend you take a list of questions to each visit, then if he tries to head to the door just keep plugging away with them until you're done. he does work for you. somehow we all get so overwhelmed when we are in the office with the doctors that our resolve heads for the door right with them!

take care of "babykitty" (that was too cute:D )

HI honey, congrats on the great news.  I know this baby is perfectly healthy and that you both are going to be fine.

Regarding the doctor....I would go to the next apt. with a list of questions.  I actually type mine and put them in a binder and write down the answers.  Yup, I would be a type A.  I know my doc is rushed so I make sure I come prepared.  The nurse always meets with me first to check my bp, urine, etc.  I ask her any questions I feel that she is qualified to answer.  She often says, "I would recommend you run that by the doctor".  I do call if I have huge concerns, but again I speak with the nurse first.

And just to complicate things, my doc is coming back from maternity leave tomorrow and I will be switching back to her from the doc who has been caring for me all along......So I will probably go through all the questions again.

If you are truly uncomfortable, by all means move.  I sense you are not one of those women who panics with every little twinge and calls the doc at 2am....so if you are not comfortable, move on.

Ruby, I just wanted to say you should inform the old doc why you were leaving, he may not know what his receptionist is like.  She may be driving away patients in droves.  Perhaps she should be driven away.

Hey!!   I am so happy for you!!!!   As for your appointment, I bet he just was brief becuase maybe he saw your records and figured you already knew the ins and outs of pregnancy?   BUT, if you don't feel comfortable with the way he handled your apt then by all means I would either find another doctor or make a complaint.  This is your body and your baby.  You need to feel comfortable with your level of care of else you will be a big stress mess (like the rest of us)
On a happier note, not too far away till you find out if your little miracle is a boy or girl!!!   Somthing to look forward too!

You know, sometimes it is good to have an inexperienced docor because they are much more cautious and enthusiastic. With my doctor I feel like he will spend time to answer my questions but he is overly sure of himself or arrogant as you said. Honestly though, it would be difficult to find the perfect OB and I'm afraid that I end up with someone who i really dislike if I switch.

Oh, and this is totally off subject butI I love the name Maxwell!! It's funny because growing up i knew a Max who was a little sh*t and always teased me so I never liked the name. Recently, I got to know him again through his sister and he is handsome and so nice. Now I love the name, LOL!  It's so classy yet not overly serious. It's on my list for sure.

My doctor is VERY laid back also. He is super confident in himself which I suppose is a good thing....but he's borderline arrogant. It's always hard to know whether those kinds are really good at what they do or if they just have a big head! lol My doc was recommended to me by probably 10 different pepole, but when they went to him he was just "small potatoes".....NOW he has a ton of patients and I think it has gone to his head. So he has all these patients now, but doesn't have the time to pay decent attention to them.

Anxious......I did let the office know. I talked to the head of OB and informed her. The receptionist got wrote up, but I figured that she'd treat me like even bigger **** if I went back or else she'd be over fake! lol

Momma......I know! I don't think I could find someone I loved entirely. lol I'm too moody....I'd find something to complain about! lol And thanks for the compliment on our baby name! :) I really like it! My old bus driver was Max and I hated it, but I think it's super cute now! lol
