first trimester bleeding

I am 5 weeks pregnant and have my first dr.'s appointment scheduled 02/07/07.  I began spotting three days ago (a few dime size spots brownish in color) and it has now increased to brick red discharge.  The spotting is now also accompanied by some cramping(similiar to light menstrual cramps).  Is there a way to test hcg levels at home, since my dr.s appointment isn't for another week and a half?  And has anyone else experienced an increase in spotting?  I am feeling worried.

I did this w/ both my children. (they r very healthy) Close to 6wk pg & close to 17wks pg.  It even got to be bright red & I had lower back pain too. I propped my feet up & took it easy. The only way for the Dr to tell u that u r doing ok is to do a Vag.u/s. It does not hurt & it's over very fast. After a week of spotting my Dr finally did one of these on me with my 1st pg & all was well. Don't really know the cause... most DR either blame sex that happened within the last 3 days or impl.bleeding & just the fact that as your uterus stretches tiny blood vessels get popped which also can cause bleeding. I know it's so scary but try not to get too worried, many many women bleed even throughout pg!!! If u still keep spotting u can always demand a vag.u/s before your appt date. LOVE & PRAYERS
