Would you mind if I ask something for the folic acid as well? Just curious - last time the doc prescribed me prenatals with extra folic acid. Should I take additional FA or the extra dose in the prenatals is enough? And is there really enough? Could it harm if it's too much? Thanks.
i think 400mg of folic acid is just about right dose everyday..if you got the prenatal, i think it got all the vitamins you need inc calcium, iron etc... try to google it to see just about how much folate you have to have
I agree with everyone. You can definitely take folic acid now, and 1000 mcg is usually the prenatal standard although some doctors prescribe an additional supplement for the first trimester. I think it just depends on the doctor's preference and your potential for birth defects.
I also take additional folic acid per dr's orders. Folic acid does not last very long in your body, so the extra amount is fine. From what I understand, it absorbs quickly, but is depleted quickly, too. Therefore, a constant supply of it is important in order to protect your baby from some nuerological disorders, spina bifida, and other defects or abnormalities.
