for those who bottle fed or are bottle feeding

by sue26, Aug 13, 2007 09:37AM
Hi,

I was just wondering how much formula your 2 or 3 week old baby drank and how often. My daughter who just turned three weeks old is drinking 4 oz of formula every 2 and a half to 3 hours. Sometimes she is still hungry and wants more but I do not give it to her since I read that baby at that age should be drinking 2 to 4 oz of formula per feeding. Also, I was wondering if you can overfeed a baby that young or if they will stop eating if they are full. Thanks .

i'm bottle feeding breast milk, not formula, so the amounts might be different. but i wanted to say that last week when she turned 3 weeks she also started to eat a lot and was gaining weight quickly. i asked the lactation consultant if it was possible to overfeed her. she said it was highly unlikely, and she'd be throwing up if she were taking in too much.

Newborns should be fed on demand. If she's still hungry, feed her. Maybe she's going through a growth spurt. If your concered, call her dr.

i agree with luvbabies. if she is hungry...feed her. my son sometimes wouldn't even make it 2 hrs inbetween a 4oz feeding, and sometimes, he did want more, and i gave it to him. if you think she is still hungry after 4 oz, make 2 more oz and offer it to her. if she doesn't want it, she'll let you know. you can't overfeed her.

good luck :o)

When my ds was switched to formula, that is the amount he took. The pediatrician told me that if he still acted hungry to increase the formula by 1/2 an ounce. Try that for 3 or 4 days and if she still seem hungry, go up 1/2 an ounce again. Some babies take more than others. What you read about is just an average. Best wishes and congratulations on your new arrival!
