genetic testing

genetic testing

i have just had my 3rd missed miscarriage, i have a 14 year old son with my previouc partner, all 3 of the miscarraiges were with my husband. They have said that I should go back on the pill for about 6 months, and they are doing genetic testing, appointment wont be for about 3 months. Does anyone know what they do for genetic testing or anything about it. (if probs can be fixed. I am at the end, my emotions are only hanging on by a string. I realy dont know how much more I can take of this. 3 missed miscarriages in 11 months is far too many.

Thankyou for your time

I am right with you.  I also had 3 miscarriages in less then a year.  Are you seeing a specialist?  After my third, I went to a specialist.  My reg dr didn't like that too much, but it was worth it.  My reg dr was also telling me to wait 6 mo and gave me a prescription for birth control.  I waited to fill it until I saw the specialist and he told me it wasn't necessary for me to be on the pill.  He did want us to wait to get pg until our testing was done, but that only took a month.  Have you been tested for autoimmune deficiencies or a blood-clotting problem?  Here are the tests my specialist had me do.  Each of them was a blood test.  I only had to go in once and they took several vials of blood.  The results came back in 2 weeks.
TSH
Prolactin
Lupus Anticoagulant
Anticardiolipin Antibodies
Factor II mutation
Factor V mutation
Protein C Activity
Protein S Activity
Fasting Homocysteine Level
Antithrombin III

Since all of those tests came back normal for me, my specialist wants me and dh to have a karyotype test done (genetic test).  I am waiting for insurance to tell us if they will pay for it, but once we get the ok, we will have blood drawn, and we will have the results in 4 weeks.

Your dr may be taking a different course of action with you because of your age too.  I am in my late 20's.  My specialist made it sound like he wouldn't even do the karyotype test if I was older because there would be a better chance my eggs were old and that was the problem.

I hope this helps.  If you are not happy with your drs advise, I would get a second opinion.

Just like Hoping123, I have also had 3 miscarriages and have no children.  I also saw a specialist after the third m/c, and had exactly the same tests done that Hoping123 has listed.  All of my results came back normal.  I also had the karyotyping done on both myself and my husband, and both of those were normal as well. I do know that it is highly unlikely that either of you would actually have an abnormal karyotype, but if in fact you do....there is unfortunately nothing that can be done.  There are no medications or treatments that can alter chromosomes.  The good news is that is very highly unlikely that it's a chromosomal problem with one of the two of you.  Like Hoping123 said, however, depending on your age there could be chromosomal defects in some of your eggs.  I'm 35, so I think that is the case with me.  Poor egg quality would not show on a karyotype.  My specialist said to me that basically the limits of modern medicine had been reached, and that his advice was to just keep trying because there was nothing wrong with me.

Hi Kittymommy,

I too have had all of the tests and all came back normal.  I have had 4 m/c in 2 years.

My doctor called me out of the blue about 6 months ago and mentioned something called MTHFR.  It is a gene that can mutate and cause m/c.  It does not, however show up on a normal genetic screening.

Ask your Doc about MTHFR gene and homocysteine levels.  The treatment is high dose folic acid (5 mg and B6 & B12 supplementation)  Do a google search on it......it is finally an answer to my m/c prayers!  We are trying to get preg this month for the first time in a year!!
