getting baby to sleep on his own?

My husband and I share a room with my 16 month old baby boy. He has a crib to sleep in, but always ends up sleeping in bed with us. I have tried just moving him into his own bed once he falls asleep, and this seems to work fine, except when he wakes in the night I dont know what to do so he ends up back in the bed with us. I know that a lot of people would put him in the crib and let him cry himself to sleep, but I really have a hard time doing that to him. Any suggestions? P.S. I cannot give him his own room because they are all occupied. Plus, I breastfeed.

By the time he's 16 months old he should be able to understand that he should stay in his own bed if you are consistent with him. It may be difficult because you are right there but if you really want him out then you have to probably slowly transition him. Maybe when he gets up...just hold him till he calms and then put him back in his crib. What I did when transitioning my son to his own room and crib a few weeks ago (6 months) I sometimes took my shirt and snuggled it up with him. Sometimes that's all they want is the closeness and they miss you. I think it's hard for them at any age but it's mainly hard on us as parents.
