group b strep

My daughter (17) was given a strep test on Mon which was negative (rapid). I took her in because she had a sore throat-slight fever-tummy ache. Today (thu) the Target clinic called and told me that it was positive for Strep B and she would NOT need antibiotics. Has anyone here had to deal with a strep b infection and get better without antibiotics. She still has a tummy ache- poor appetite-loose stools and slight headache . I do have an appointment with her pediatrician (which I should have done originally.. sigh.. as I now feel that we have wasted a week in getting a diagnosis and plan.  Looking for any ideas...

I think there is some sort of communication mishap.  A strep infection of the throat is usually treated with antibiotics.

Call or go to the Target Clinic and get the paper results of the culture they did on her.  Then call your peds office and ask what to do about it.

Hi, I think there's a miscommunication too. Group B strep is a infection caused by bacteria that is present in the intestines, genitals, and urinary tract, half the female population is a carrier, and it rarely causes symptoms. Diagnosis is made by testing the blood, or spinal fluid, or when your preg. they swab the vagina and rectum. Strep B is not treated with antibiotics unless it invades your blood stream, or your having a vaginal delivery. However a  strep infection of the throat causes symptoms, diagnosis is made by a throat swab, and it is treated with antibiotics.
