hair dye

Hi guys, I just am posting this for opinions/experiences. its a bit of a silly question, but my hair looks awful. I am 4 months pregnant and really in need of some root touch ups (blond)-which I have put off for now.  I know everything you read up on hair dyes during pregnancy, and conflicting opinions about it being safe, but I'm looking for your opinions on getting your hair colored while pregnant?  How many of you guys continue with your normal beauty regimes? None of my friends color their hair, so I can't really ask them.  I don't want to be vain, but I don't like the dark roots look either. I'm willing to suffer for my baby, but would love your guys' opinions.

i have gotten my hair highlighted forever and thought when i got pg that i would have to stop.  now my sister is my hair dresser so i know she wouldn't do anything to harm me or her neice.  she stated that getting my hair colored would be fine.  i did wait until after my first trimester.  however i get highlights and she uses foils and the color never touches my scalp.  i believe that my what to expect when your expecting book says that coloring your hair is fine but it may not turn the same color due to your hormones but i think bleach is bleach and that only counts for other colors.  good luck.

I waited until the doctor told me I was ok to get my hair done.  I have been going to my hair dresser for years now and I trust her.  She highlights it but doesn't go all the way to the root.  I have gotten my hair done three or four times now since I was told it was ok and everything is fine.  If you don't feel comfortable doing it then don't, but if you do then do...that is all I can say really, b/c I asked others opinions and it really doesn't matter what they say, b/c you are going to do what your heart tells you to do!  Good Luck!

I have also highlighted my hair when pregnant but I waited until 5-6 months just for my own piece of mind. They say highlighting is safer than coloring because the color never touches your scalp. Don't worry about feeling bad about wanting to do it. We all need a pick me up when we are preg. to help our selves feel good. I for one can't wait til I can bleach my teeth again. I meant to do it b4 I got preg. but never got around too it and boy do they need it!

Funny you should mention it. I wanted to lighten my hair for summer, so i picked up some hair color. When my dh came home, I told him I picked some up (it would cost me over a hundred to have it done professionally, something I cannot reason out, lol) and he said  something like "looks like a good color, but you CAN'T color it while your pg" So I spent the next ten minutes pulling up website after website that professed the safety of hair coloring while pg. It was enough to settle his mind : )

Basically, from the sources I have found, it is safe to use. Once upon a time there was concern about lead in hair color, but that concern has passed as they no longer use that in colorant (well, with the exception of Garnier, they got in big trouble a few years back when some was detected, but it has been fixed now) I actually found my hair takes color better while I am pg for some reason.

My Dr. actually told me it was ok to color your hair while pregnant. I don't color mine, but I asked because I did it last summer and highlighted it blonde and now its grown out and I really wanted to dye it back to my natural really dark brown color, but I decided to chop it off instead lol! Also, my friend just had her baby and she dyed her hair all the way through her pregnancy!

I have very dark hair and lots of grey and there was no way I could go even 4 weeks without coloring.  What I did during first trimester was use Loving Care.  It is temporary and not as harsh.  In the 2nd and 3rd trimesters I used regular hair dye.  My mother also dyed her hair with all three of her babies and we all turned out fine.  I don't think it is a huge concern anymore---just make sure the room is well ventilated when you do it.

Some of the concern comes with the fumes too. Make sure you have it done in a WELL ventilated area.

I wouldn't do it but just my opinion.  On Good Morning America this past week they were discussing a new study that found that hairdye increased lymphoma cancer rates.  So to me if it can do that to us, I wouldn't want to introduce those chemicals to my baby when it is in my womb.  But that is just me, I am over the top cautious.  They say vegetable dyes are okay, maybe do a fun veggie dye color for a pick me up.  They also don't want you to be in the salon during high color times b/c of fumes so if you do go make sure your appt is the first one in the morning before it gets really stinky.
(I also highlight/lowlight my hair so once I get prego it will be looking bad! But the baby is more important than my hair!:-)

Hi when i was pregnant with my ds. I got my hair fully colored in my first trimester. The doctor told me it was nothing to worry about, therefore I didn't. Nothing out of the ordinary happened either except I dyed my hair red and because of my raging hormones it didn't stay in very long just faded back into my natural color. It was a waste of money but i needed the change.

AS FAR AS THE LYMPHOMA WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THAT SHOW IN THE BEAUTY SHOP I WORK AT AND IT IS TRUE IT DOES CAUSE IT IN SOME CASES BUT IN 98.9% IT DOES NOT CAUSE LYMPHOMA.  WE JUST HAD TO SIT AND THINK ABOUT ALL THE THINGS THAT CAUSE CANCER IN 1.1% OF PEOPLE.

Color your hair--have fun.  I got my hair permed when I was pg.  They were concerned in the past due to strong chemicals--the products are much safer thatn they were 20 yrs ago.  My hairdresser said that the perm or colorant may not take as well due to hormones--So if the color doesn't last as long don't be disappointed--it is due to your body changing.
