hand foot and mouth-early pg

hand foot and mouth-early pg

my husband and i are meeting a friend and her hubby for dinner 2night.  however she just called to tell me that she has just discovered her little girl has hand foot and mouth disease.  my friend's parents are babysitting so the little girl is not coming for dinner. my friend said that she had read that the disease can cause probs for women in late pg who are exposed to it and since she and her husband have been around the little girl they might be contagious.  she said she wanted to tell me in case i was worried and wanted to cancel and she didn't just want to announce it casually over dinner.  I am certainly not in late pg and am only 6 wks 2 days.  in my opinion, i don't think i should be worried about this as even taking public transport exposes me to all sorts of people and germs.  i can't wrap myself in cotton wool all the time and the chance of any problem arising sounds very remote indeed.  i think my friend is just being conscientious.  any thoughts?

All I can say is that it's very thoughtful of your friend to mention it to you beforehand.  Not many would do that.  I don't think you would be at any danger.  Like you said, you're constantly exposed to all kinds of germs and don't even know about it.  Enjoy your dinner!!

My friends son had hand foot mouth disease and it is very contagious.  The dad got it right after that and it is very painful and you can get a fever from it.  Just from that, I would be more careful since you are early in your pregnancy.  You can always plan on having dinner another time.

Probably not what caused it but I have a friend with a severely mentally retarded son who feels that exposure to Hand foot and mouth disease in her first trimester is what caused. You never know, I wouldn't take the chance personally.

I'm replying to your post to me, but I figured yours is further up and you would be more likely to see this one. I'm not in the UK, I'm in the US. It's nice that they don't do your first scan until 12 weeks, then at least you can see your baby better =) And by the time you go in you will be 1/3 of the way there!!! YAY!!! Well, I hope you have a nice dinner with your friends and hubby!

You are probably just fine to go to dinner.  Just wash your hand often, and try to avoid physical contact, it's often spread by holding hands and things like that.  I wouldn't be worried though, your immunities are high in pregnancy, just be cautious and try to wash your hands lots.  I was worried about being exposed to all sorts of things because I worked in nursing in the doctors office... but I jus twashed my hands lots and never had a probelm:)
