I just had a check-up a week ago yesterday. I was 16w4d and it took my dr 1-2 minutes to find the heartbeat. He ended up having to push on my belly with one hand and then use the doppler with the other, I guess he was trying to move the baby into a certain spot.

Have you had an ultrasound yet??

yea when i was pregnant i couldnt hear the heart beat til like 22weeks because i had "extra fluff" as the doctor put it... i had to have ultra sounds done every time i went to the dr just to make sure the heart was beating. Further along you will be able to hear it just fine i wouldn't worry about it at all.

I am a bigger girl also.  At my appointment at 14w we heard it, but at the appointment I had at 16w we did not hear it.  My doctor does an U/S if she cannot hear the heartbeat to to make sure everything is okay.  That day it was the way the baby was lying.

It is harder to hear, alos it depends on how the baby is laying. They should be able to get it on U/S though! Good Luck!

Um.. i am a bigger girl at around a size 16-18 and i have heard my baby's h/b since 9 weeks through abdominal u/s or doppler.  I just went for my 16 week checkup and we found h/b within a minute.. i heard it at 11 weeks 6 days last time in about a minute.. Good luck.. I hope everything is OK~

Hi.  I'm 33.3 weeks pregnant and I was in l & d on Sat night for some serious cramping (everything is fine).  I was in a room with a woman who was pretty big, not really big, but larger than myself.
She was about 24 weeks along and the nurses had an impossible time trying to find the heartbeat to hook the monitor up.
I'm sure everything is ok.

If you are 13wks, 6days, we are due on the exact same day!!! I will be 14 weeks tomorrow with a EDD of 1/31/07. About the Heartbeat, I went last week when I would have been 13 weeks on the nose. The Dr. couldn't find the heartbeat and my heart sank. He went ahead and did an ultrasound and come to find out he was looking to low. As a matter of fact, he could barely get the baby to hold still long enough to see the heartbeat. Don't panic about it.

Do you have a tilted uterus? That could also make it more difficult to hear the heartbeat via doppler.

when i had my son the docors was checking me and he told me to put my hands  under my hips is that what u mean

by dylansmommy, Aug 01, 2006 12:00AM
oh if you had it back then about 2 years ago can u still have it ?

by CrystalO, Aug 01, 2006 12:00AM
I've heard some women don't hear the heartbeat until 16 weeks.  I've heard that the weight doesn't make much of a difference, it's more about how the baby is positioned.  I'm sure everything will be alright and you'll see a lively little baby jumping around during the ultrasound. :)  Best wishes and keep us posted.

I had a doppler done at 12 weeks and the Dr said its a 50-50 chance of hearing it that early.  I had another one at 14 weeks and he still had a hard time finding it but the baby moves so much he didnt like the Dr pushing on him.  Cause then when I had an u/s you can see him jumping around and I couldnt even feel it yet.

i have some "extra fluff" also, and am on my 3rd preg.  with both of my others, and this one, the dr. has always been able to find the hb around 10wks with a doppler (knock on wood).  i have a tilted uterus but the dr. said i have always been lucky that my little ones had very strong hbs and they were positioned well.  each preg, when they checked early d/t my request they seemed rather surprised to have located the hb so well.  this tells me that it is not common, so i'm sure you have nothing to worry about.  good luck to you and your little one.
