high triglycerides in my 8 month old baby? Probable causes?

by jgazol, Mar 02, 2007 12:00AM
Hello there,
Currently, my 8 month-old daughter is in the hospital for dengue fever. She is recovering but in the lattest blood work results, she had very high levels of triglycerides. The doctor could not explain if this was related to the dengue or what was causing it. I believe this test was the first she has had for lipids, as the previous tests carried out had focused on platelet counts hematocrit, white blood cells, etc. so there is no previous reference to her pre-dengue lipid levels.
She has had problems (before the dengue) with gaining weight, despite regular breast feeding and supplemental feeding with baby food (both store-bought and homemade), but had not done any tests before this one.
Any one have any idea what the cause might be??
Thank you.

Where did your daughter get dengue fever?  Are you outside North America?

Yes, I live with my family in Nicaragua, Central America, where Dengue fever unfortunately is rather common. I myself have had it twice and most of my family as well. We sleep under moskito nets but unfortunately, the species of moskitoes that transmit dengue (A. aegipti) tend to feed during the day, when its impossible to stay under  nets all the time.
