metformin

My boyfriend and I have been trying to conceive for 2 years now, I recently discovered I have pcos and I have been on metformin since december. Has anyone actually has any success just taking metformin?

I'm sure there are several ladies here who will give their stories.

Are you overweight at all?  There has been some success reported following a lower carb/healthy fat type of plan such as the South Beach diet.  There is some anecdotal evidence that it may help PCOS and boost conception success.

The way it was explained to me was that metformin helps you ovulate more regularly. My cousin was having some trouble ttc and some of the ladies here told her to check into pcos (she was a little over weight but not much), the doc put her on metformin and she was pregnant within a month.

the metformin not only helps to regulate ovulation, if you are not ovulating on your own, but it also helps your glucose and insulin levels which is a big issue in someone with PCOS.  I was diagnosed with PCOS after my 2nd mc and started with an RE.  We tested everything under the sun, came up with PCOS and insulin resistance and a few other things that could have been slight possible issues with my miscarriages.  I tried to lose some weight, thought I was smarter than the doctor and then went on to mc a third time.  I realized then, he knew what he was doing even though he could not pin point an exact cause.  I started on Metformin and when I got a positive I stopped it and went on to have my 4th mc.  I then switched RE's - to a more aggressive one.  I lost about 25 pounds, got up to proper doses on the Met and about 6 months after my 4th loss, we started to TTC again.  I added progesterone supp at 3 dpo as well as baby aspirin and increased folic acid (due to MTHFT mutuation also) and got a positive on our first month of trying!  I stayed on the Met & progesterone thru week 13 and my DD is now over 10 months old!  I stayed on teh folic acid until some time in the 2nd or 3rd trimester and the baby aspirin the entire pregnancy.  DH and I are getting ready to start trying for #2 this summer, so I am now back on the Met, baby aspirin and extra folic acid in preparation.  ONce we are officially trying, I'll start on the progesterone supp too (not the fun part!).

So....long story short, it can happen!!  Metformin is a wonderful thing!  I truly beleive you need to stay on it thru the first trimester though and some doctors still say stop  at  a positive test.  Now some doctors will even have women stay on it thru the whole pregnancy, but that is not very common.  Usually it will help reduce the chance of gestational diabetes too...although not for me, I still ended up on glucophage at about 30 weeks due to GD.

Good luck to you and if you have any questions please feel free to ask!
