I have a three year old son, he has learning difficulties (special needs) as they call it now.He is delayed in many ways and has been under a childs consultant for the last two years. my biggest concern with him though is that he always stiffens up,  its like he has no controll of what he is doing, he is also very clumsy and can not walk far. My son has had many tests, including an mri scan but all came back clear, i have expressed my concerns to his consultant at every review but she just sort of shrugs it off. I no that this is not normal because he is even doing the moovements in his sleep, he just carnt keep still.  he has started nursery there is other people telling his consultant that this is happening too, like his teacher, special needs teacher and they also expressed that he scares the other children due to his uncontrolled moovements. He is such a loving child, so friendly and sociable and he is going to find it hard when starts school, i just dont want him to be singled out. was just woundered if any one had any advice for me,  Im not looking to change my son,  I have also menchaned on several occasions to his consultant that when i was pregnant, two weeks over due my waters broke, they took me for a scan to confirm this then sent me home for a week cos there was not enough beds left, so one day somebody menchaned that my son being the way he is could have something to do with my waters and inffection, could this be true? thank you for taking the time to read this and sorry about the spelling.

sorry i dont no about your son but your water broke and the sent you home for a week omg i cant beleive that you are lucky your son is even alive yes i think an infection could have caused something like this investigate further.
you have every right to sue that hospital and i would i am a midwife and that is absolute rubbish you dont send a lady home whos water has broken period the risk of infection is immediatly there and the baby should be born within 24 hours.
like i said OMG i have never heard of such malpractice goodluck.

I am also a child and youth worker and work with various fields with students as such. I am currently working with students with special needs.Some have developmental disabilities, others it's learning disabilities, etc. I may be able to offer you some type of comfort-As your son goes to school, depending on the teachers, the other children may get used to his uncontrollable movements and see he as well is a child just like everyone else. I think children nowdays are more compassionate when it comes to different things like that because it's very common. I cannot say what has caused this to happen to your son. I mean anything could be the reason, which I find a little odd that even in mri's they have not foudn what part of his brain is controlling hsi spastic movements. Know that this is not your fault and that I think children with special needs are truly a gift from heaven-they are special in everyway and are absolutely wonderful and amazing. I am sure your son is all of that and more.

It's difficult as a parent to protect their children when it comes to school. but regardless whether a child has a LD or DD, etc, kids CAN be cruel to even "average" children, you know what I mean. It's important for the teachers at nursery to explain to the other children when your son experienced uncontrollable movements that it isn't his fault-he is a very nice little boy and he's just like the rest of them-it sounds to me that the teacher is somewhat judging him claiming he is scaring the other children; they might be scared at once but with time will defaintely get used to it. I've seen it happen. I hope this kind of helps:)

when you say "stiffens up" and "uncontrolable movements".... could they be seizures?  Has the extensive testing they have done on him included an EEG?  .... that may be something to look into.

What about Tourette's syndrome, I know the people with this can have alot of uncontrollable movements.

Could he be posturing?  Dyskinesia?

I would ask your pediatrician--if s/he doesn't know or can't give you an answer with possible treatment/therapy, then I'd ask to be referred to a neurologist.
