There are manyt different forms of skin spots called nevus. They vary in degrees but even a small mole is a nevus. My son has a latte one one his belly because it is coffee couloured. I think this is something you should ask about at his next check and if you think it is growing take him to the pead immediately and they will be able to tell you more about it. Good Luck

the color reminds me of a hemangioma, which is very common in infants, although i think you typically see them on the head or back/shoulder. hemangiomas usually aren't there at birth and develop sometime after the first week. Was it there when he was born?
If it is a hemangioma, it may grow and even become raised. Good news is that there is no medical problems associated with it, and his is in a less noticable location.

I agree with tam2girls though. Ask the ped and get some peace of mind. They will tell you what it is and what to expect. My first had a hemangioma on her back and the ped told me it would grow at first and start to fade after a year. everything he told me happened, and it was nice to know what to expect. My second had red markings on her eyelid and forehead. I feared it would be the beginnings of a hemangioma, but the ped told me at her 2 week check that it was just stork bites or angel's kisses and that it would fade within a couple of months. Again, his assessment was right on.

Two of my daughters have birthmarks also.  They have a variety of different ones.  My oldest has strawberry birthmarks, which are the hemangioma type tiredbuthappy mentioned.  Hers were not there at birth, but showed up about a week later.  They peaked in size at about 2 years old, and are slowly getting smaller.  I also had that same type, and for the most part they all went away.

My 3rd daughter has one of those as well and they showed up after birth.  She was born with 2 others though.  One is right below her nose, and is a similar color as the one in your picture.  Her doctor believes it is a port wine stain, which don't tend to go away, but also don't usually grow too much.  The doctor is sending us to a specialist to have a look, as it is a possibility that we may have it lasered off or something.  I'm not sure yet what we will do, but am willing to have it looked at.  She also has what is known as mongolian spot, but that one is more of a bluish color like a bruise.
