hi

my eldest son, said a few words at 18 months to 2 years, but was not as advanced as my daughter at that age. Then BAM! at 2 years 2 months he started talking in full blown sentences! he had been taking it all in and waiting til he could do it in one i guess! he is 3 now and speaks brilliantly, more like a 5 or 6 year old. I have a 19 month old son now who is the same, says very little, but I'm not worried cos I know he understands everything I say, sounds pretty much the same with your little guy. Unless you are unduly worried that he might have a problem, he will probably turn round and amaze you in the next few months coming out with sentences. x

my brother was like that. he refused to talk. he'd point at things and grunt. after talking to many doctors and therapists they were given the advice to refuse to give what he wanted to him until he said what it was. it took a few weeks but he eventually started saying what he wanted. now....we can't get him to shut up. lol

Does he have older siblings?  That can be a cause of late talking, sometimes.

My 3rd child did not talk util he was 2yrs 7 mos.  Seriously, he said *maybe* 10 words.  I was very concerned, as my other two talked much sooner.  (DD, the firstborn said 30+ words by her first b-day!)  We knew he understood every word we said, though, so it was very frustrating--Why wouldn't he talk?!

BUT, when E started talking, finally, within a week or two he went from a few words to full sentences.  Now, at 3 and a half, he is every bit as bright as the other two were at his age-- maybe even brighter!!  He has a huge vocabulary, and is SO expressive, it is hilarious.
I know it's hard not to worry, but i feel quite sure your son is perfectly fine!!

i am goin gthrough the same thing right now!! my son is 2 1/2 and just started saying no,me,and ya!!! he has also started making animal sounds. we have started him in speech and they tested his hearing which is fine. we are trying signs with him i know that it doesnt make him talk but it is one way to understand him (he gets very up set when he wants something and we dont understand). and slowly working on sounds.  it maybe worth a shot. .... please dont give up hope some kids just talk later.

Every state has some form of Early Intervention services.  They will provide a free speech therapy evaluation to see if there are concerns.  Then if he does qualify, he can receive therapy for free, or at least a small fee based on your income.  I know this isn't the first time you've posted concerns about him...so I'd look into it to ease your mind.

I used to work as a Service Coordinator for the Early Intervention programs (I helped set the families up with the evaluations, etc...)  We always had the MAJORITY of our speech therapy referrals at age two.  There is supposed to be a large jump in vocabulary around this time and most concerns were discovered at a child's two year old well baby visit at their doctor.

Good luck!

Thank you to amy0013.  That is exactly what I was going to post.  You are 'so worried' about your son, new mommy, so this is the thing to do rather than just sitting and worrying.  Good luck.

My son was late in his talking too.  He's four now and has caught up with his peers.

In your state there should be a Regional Center or something similar.  You don't need a referral.  My son got free Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapy.

I was soooooo worried too.  All of my son's peers at age 2 were talking so much more than he was.  After over a year of speech, he's now talking and singing and actually has better enuciation than his peers.

Try to call your Regional Center for an evaluation.  Ask your pediatrician for the number or look in the phone book.

My friends son hardly said anything at 2 he got Speech too, now he's 3 and he's talking alot.

Hugs

i would suggest maybe having him checked out or speaking with your childs pediatrician(if he has one) Cameron had began a few words and then had stopped and now he repeats everything you say...especially sh*t from no hao kai lan...the word snow sounds like sh*t but well for children...they pick up easily on little things like that....but yeah you ask him who's cutter than Cam Cam and he says nooobody...its cute...he attends daycare and i find ever since he changed to the toddler room his speach has increased sooo much....but yeah...its up to you if you feel  a concern for your child speach than you are most likely right...:) Best of luck to you

the doctor wanted me to have him for speech but i wasn't so concern then, I am now and will be talking to the doc about it. My parents say its the pacifier, so Im taking it away, he can have it only bedtime or naps

It's not the pacifier.  My son even talks when he has one in his mouth.

haha Annie so does Cameron... he has his for naps and bed only..at least until his back molars come through....its his soothing thing...sometimes he will sleep without it and other times and he is in pain he will only result to the paci...and its soo funny when they talk with it
