Hello everyone I got a message from my dr office today and im worried about it so I would love if someone can help me understand. I took my diabetes test last week and they messed up and took my blood after the hour was up plus i had breakfst that morning aswell so today they call me and tell me to came in tom and retake the test a 3 hr test im to be fastingFasting glucose tolerance test Glucose test - blood. what is fastingFasting glucose tolerance test Glucose test - blood? can i drink in the morning? what will happen if i do have diabetes? I know nothing about it. I didnt have it with my daughter so i am clueless. Will my baby be okay? thank you to anybody who helps me .
I was just diagnosed with gestationalGestational diabetes Gestational trophoblastic disease diabetes last week. FastingFasting glucose tolerance test Glucose test - blood means no food or drink. However, you may drink as much water as you want, just don't add anything like lemon juice (that is something I do when I drink water, or did, rather). Talk to the nurse first, but I believe you can also have plain black coffee, nothing added. The 3 hour test is usually a 12 hour fast. They will do a fasting blood test first. Then you will drink the glucose solution wich is more concentrated then the one hour test glucose was. Then they will do one blood draw every hour for 3 hours. At least that is how they did mine. However, my fasting test was high and my first blood test after drinking the solution was high, so they stopped and made the diagnosis at that point.
If you do have diabetes, you will probably meet with a dietician first to choose a diet that is right for you. I think that they like to try to control this with diet first before they use medications. Hope this helps. I am still trying to understand it myself.
My doctor office said don't have orange juice because it is sweet it can cause a wrong reading. Just to be safe I wouldn't drink anything other than water. I had to do the 3 hour test with my first son and was just borderline gestational diabetes so I didn't have to go through some of the things people who really have it have to go through. They thought my son might be big but he was only 7 pounds 8 ounces. Good Luck!! Ginger
I do not have first hand experience with this, but I do believe in most cases if you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes that you will return to normal after the pregnancy. Meaning you may not have the blood sugar problem after you give birth. I'm sure Christie can shed more light on this one though.
I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes last month. I was told nothing to eat or drink (I assumed that included water.) I know you're not allowed to have water once you drink the sugar drink they give you. In fact, they told me I couldn't walk around, sleep, eat, or drink water. Just a warning, you may be tired after you drink the sugar water. I know when I went for the 1 hour test, I didn't expect to feel so tired afterwards.
Most babies are fine if the mother has gestational diabetes that has been monitored. The baby could become large, but the doctors monitor that as well. Just be sure to keep all doctor's appoiontments. Good luck!!
In response to heathrs comment, you should return back to normal after the pregnancy. I had gestational diabetes with my second son and my sugars and everything were normal after I had him. I am pregnant again with no gestational diabetes (just a bit of hope for the future) I had been told I would most likely have it this time around, and I was very surprised when my reading was so low....
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE I FEEL ALOT BETTER NOW.I GO AT 9:OO IN THE MORNING SO I WILL TELL EVERYONE TOM WHAT HAPPENS I HOPE THEY TELL THE RESULTS THEN. THANK YOU
I never had GD but alot of pregnant women get it its nothing to loss sleep over just if you have it do your diet right and exactly what your doc tells you to good luck and I pray your one of the lucky women don't get it.
Well I did the 3 hr test today I was in the office for about 4 1/2 hrs it will be all worth it to keep my baby safe. We will get the results tom so keep fingers crossed for me.:)
I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes with my third child. I was put on a special diet which did not work (most of the time it does work) and ended up taking insulin shots twice a day for the remainder of the pregnancy. After giving birth my blood sugar went back to normal. Gestational only means during pregnancy and most people do go back to normal within 24 hours of giving birth. However, if you have a family history of diabetes then your chances of developing diabetes later in life is greater. I had a healthy 9 pound baby boy, no problems other than he wanted to come out butt first. Thankfully we got him headed in the right direction and no C-section was required.
I just got off the phone with my dr office and I passed. yeah yeah I am so realived it sucked haveing to do the test but it paid off so thank you to everyone who helped me understnd it a little better. Lets just hope everything else goes well the next two months.
