newborn and hard stools......

Hey everyone,  I had little Alyssa on Saturday and we were sent home with enfamil with iron formula b/c Im not breast feeding.  We ran out of food so DH bought enfamil with less iron and thats what shes been eating for the last 3 or 4 days.  Anyways now all of a sudden today she is fussy and instead of having those really loose seedy stools they have at first, they are really hard and she screams while passing them.  The last BM was yesterday morning and then she had one today.  Could it be the formula....less iron?  I thought iron constipated them.  If Im giving her less iron why is this happening?

DS is on Enfamil w/ Iron also. Babies shouldn't be on "less iron" unless your dr tells you. When DS would get constiaped I would add a teaspoon or two of dark Karo syrup to his bottle and it worked like a charm.

I put Karo (dark) in my baby's formula for two days - 1 table spoon in each bottle and they soften right up.  Try it it works.  Dr told me to do it.  Could be the formula - I got my son who is 11w on one that cost $27 a can and it work wonderful.

I'm sorry teaspoon in every bottle for two days or less.  It took more then one time with Ryan.  I did this when he was 4w old.

yes dark karo syrup works well, my daughter had the same problem. the doctor eventually put her on gentle lease formula. never had a problem again. good luck.

It can also be caused by dehydration or jaundice.  Be sure she is getting enough formula (whichever kind) and don't worry about the iron issue at this point, just get the kind with iron next time you buy some.

we just addressed const w/dr on wed. more than likely it is the change in formula. our dr said 1 teaspoon of dark karo syrup per ounce of formula. next diaper we we had poop. i was never so happy at the site!!!

Thankyou everyone.  Im going to send dh out to get some kyro syrup.  Is this the same as corn syrup?  We live in Canada and Im not sure if we have dark kyro syrup or if its the same thing.  I will get dh to check it out.

dark karo syrup is dark corn syrup.
