by nickswife, Oct 23, 2009 05:24PM
my daughter hasnt had a bowel movement since tuesday, 3 days ago. we were at the doctor yesterday and he said to give her sugar water, 2 ounces in the morning and 2 ounces at night. well we have been doing that since yesterday morning and she still hasnt had one. i feel so bad for her, she keeps trying but nothing.. :( the doctor said to try it for a couple days but she needs something asap. does anyone know of anything else that works? karo syrup? she is 1 week old 2 days, and was 3 weeks early. any help is appreciated!

well theree weeks early is considered full term ...so i am considering ur daughter as a full term healthy baby. my Ds has constipation between 2 and 3 weeks old ..i know how heart breakin g it is.
therefore , i called a 24 nursing call service(live in canada) and his peditrician , they told me to give him unsweetened prune or apple juice only 1 oz between feedings...make sure he doesnt miss any feeding. so give him in between.
if that doesnt work after a couple days give him corn syrup a teaspoon of cornsyrup once or twice a day.
the above advice is from his doc and nurses line. so i bought prune after the second time 1 oz once and it worked wonder ..i didnt try the cornsyrup
so try prune or apple it will work i told my friend about this when her dauther was 10 days and apple juice (no sugar added) worked very well)
just to let u know babies go up to 4 or 5 days without a poop
but if she is constipated try the juice but realy make sure u buy the no sugar added one

i know how much u are worrying but it is a phase so it will pass
is she drinking formula or breastfeeding if it is a formula and it is tha everyday problem u may consider to change the brand
good luck
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, my husband and I went through this with all three of our boys since they were 3 days old. What worked best for us was 1/2 teaspoon karo syrup in a 2 oz bottle. We also used pediatric glycerin suppositories. Instead of inserting them completely in the rectum, we would place it there and hold it. Usually our children would pass a lot of gas and then start passing stool. We would place it there until they passed stool, and then remove it while they were going, after they stopped we would reinsert it, and we would repeat this until the stool they were passing was soft. It's a little time consuming, but produces great results. Your also not supposed to use it on a regular basis because the bowels can become reliant on it. Our pediatrician recommended this after we had tried castor and mineral oil. Which you can also do, but only in very small amounts, this didn't work so well because it tastes gross, and it's hard on the stomach. I hope that helps some. I felt so bad for our boys, they would strain, and cry, and eventually start vomiting until they went. Good Luck

Here is what the experts at BabyCenter think about it:

Definitely go for the suppositories - they're mild enough for frequent use if necessary, and they work in less than 20 minutes
