newborn skin

by Stacie30, Sep 08, 2005 12:00AM
Ok. Need advice. Conner is a little over 2 weeks now and his hands, feet, and behind his knees have started to peel. I've been putting baby lotion and Aquaphor on it, but it's just getting worse. I haven't been "overbathing" him (he gets one every 3 days like the pediatrician said). Anyone have any clues what to do?

I had the exact same problem with my son.  The little wrinkles on his ankles actually cracked and bled a little.  The doctor said it's completely normal and is the result of their skin reacting to being dry for the first time in their lives.  I used exactly what you are using, then I switched to Vaseline.  That seemed to keep the skin moist longer and helped heal the cracks.  I put socks on him to keep the Vaseline from rubbing off.

Just keep doing what your doing
Cody came out with "peeling" skin the nurse said maybe he was overdue and ran out of fluid , It was like he had sun tanned and the skin was peeling off
They told me just to keep lotion on him ,so I did and it took a while but he was just fine!

Hello. Aubrey did the same thing from week 2-4. I used creamy vasolene (spelling) and it worked great! I hope all else is going well. I have not been here in a long time. My little one is 6 wks and still very colicky! Long 3 hours crying in the evening and from 5am-8am. However, still so cute and a joy to be with! Talk soon!

thanks ladies :) I was hoping it wasn't a big deal. pretty freaky looking though and my other two never did it. amazing to me that you can experience something new on the 3rd baby. LOL

CDW- bless your heart!! that is a long time to have to listen to your baby cry. my oldest was like that. it was so frustrating because you couldn't help but feel like there was something wrong you should be able to fix.  hang in there!! :o)

My doc said not to put anything on him but my girlfriend who's son is 3 weeks younger than Logan said she put the stuff they use for cracked nipples during breastfeeding. I thought that was a great idea because it says that you don't have to wash it off before feedings so you know if they get some on their hands and put their hands in their mouths it's safe for them. Good luck.

Try using Eucerine or the Walmart equivalent.  It is mainly for Eczema but it works great for dry skin and is safe for babies!

How true..
Like you my last is 9 years apart I think yours are 10?
its like starting all over brand new!

Even though you have done it before you still worry, wonder and forget!

cinnamon- yep- mine are 10 years apart and it's totally like starting over. my favorite part- the baby stuff is WAY COOLER now than it was 10 years ago. LOL. When I had my last one battery operated swings were just coming out.... now I don't know how I'd live without one.

debra- thanks for the tip on the lanolin. I think I'm going to try to leave it alone (if I can stand it- it doesn't seem to bother the baby) and then if it doesn't get any better I'm going to try the lanolin. you're the second person who has told me about it.  :o)
