one day old has fluid in lungs and infection--related?:

a newborn is not crying but eating etc.  He had a three hour delivery and they are saying that is why their is fluid in the lungs.  He has an infection but they do not know what it is yet.  Would or could he have gotten an infectiion from the mother? or more likely the health providers.

Some newborns delivered rapidly may show some signs of fluid in the lungs, and show signs of rapid respirations commonly called transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN).  This usually resolves with observation and oxygen support if needed within a few days.

Infection is most commonly transmitted via the mother during birth.  Group B Strep is the usual culprit.  This is a common bacteria that simply is present inappropriately in some 25% of the female population. It is not a venereal disease, or in any way indicative of something "wrong" with the mother.  It is just a normal bacteria that is present in the wrong place.

Hospital acquired infection is usually evidenced some days later, and the tale will be told via the results of the blood cultures that surely were taken, as to what the infective organism is.

Some infants are treated as IF they had an infection, and in fact no infection is shown in the cultures that come back several days later.  The problem is, you must treat AS IF and early, rather than take the wait and see approach.
