Wow...your friend has alot going on! How old is she? I think the best thing for her to do is to try and loose some weight first. She will only gain more weight when/if she becomes pregnant and she is already at an unhealthy weight. The weight could possibly bring on more health issues because the body goes through some major changes once you do become pregnant. So it's not just a health issue for the mom but for the baby as well.

My sister was really over weight when she got pregnant (probably around 285 lbs) and she has 3 healthy kids. I know she developed G-diabetes and luckily that went away after the births.

As for her stopping Clomid....if she wants to get pregnant, I think that is the one thing that could help her with having the PCOS. I guess I am surprised that the doctor didn't advise her on maybe loosing some weight first (for obvious health reasons).

From what I have heard about the Metformin drug, I believe that can actually make you loose weight. I found this link that talks about Clomid, Metformin and PCOS. I don't know if it's info you have already read or not.

Sorry I couldn't be of any more help. I wish your friend much luck in getting pregnant and having a healthy pregnancy! :)

I got pregnant our first try when I was 32 and weighed 230.  I got pregnant my second cycle not using BC when I was 42 and weighed 230.  When my first child was 5, I weighed about 340 and I'm 5'8" tall.  We weren't using BC when I was that size and it just didn't happen.  And my periods were irregular when I was really big.

Your friend's weight could be an issue, but I think she should listen to her doctor if she trusts him/her.  The OB/GYN I had when I had my first (and had gestational diabetes) told me to get the weight off before I try again.  Then, when I was at my highest weight, my then OB/GYN told me to go for it, saying that if I wait until I get the weight off, it may never happen.

I have PCOS and am currently losing weight so I can conceive.  My OB/GYN told me that studies have shown that women with PCOS, if they lose 15%-20% of their body weight, have a greater chance of conceiving.  I was about 50 lbs overweight.  I lost 15 lbs and became pregnant but miscarried.  My OB said that the good news is now I'm conceiving b/c of the weight loss.  I'm on Metformin and he had me on a hunger suppresant to jump start my diet.  He also recommended using Weight Watchers, which has helped me alot.  I know your friend may be discouraged, but I would tell her to talk to her doctor or go to an endocronologist to discuss weight loss.  Once she drops that 15%, her insulin resistance will decrease and she may ovulate regularly.  I wish her luck!

I am a plus size woman.  I've always struggled with my weight.  The doctors always told me I'd never get pregnant because the way I carry my weight is around my stomach.  I have a little waist with a big hip area.  I've been pregnant 5 times and everytime I lost about 30 lbs. I would start having regular periods and get pregnant but they never worked out.  So last year I started going to a weight doctor.  I started out at 296 and ended at 232 in Dec.  I had my cycle every month. So when Nov. came and I started my cycle I had one pack of clomid left and decided to take them.  I told myself that if this didn't work I would continue to work on my weight loss because I not getting any younger.  I am 35.  So two days before Christmas '06 I took a pregnancy test just to take it because they always came out neg.  But this time was different it was POSITIVE.  I didn't want to get excited because of all the times before so I just took it day by day.  My husband and I have tried for 14yrs and now in Aug.'07 I will be having my first baby.  I will be having a boy.  So don't give up.  What helped me was having the support of my husband with my weight loss and having a great doctor that didn't give up on me.  I'll be working on my weight again after my little boy is born because oh my gosh I'd forgot what food taste like and I am back were I started before I started lossing weight but it's all worth it to me.  Hope your friend dosen't give up.  Take care.

To: Want2BeMama, anyone else reading this
Wow.  I know this was a long time ago so I doubt the woman who wrote this will see my response but does anyone else think the "friend" should mind her own business?  I know I'd be hacked if my friend wrote this about me on an online forum!  If her Dr isn't concerned and says it's not an issue, I'd be more inclined to believe that.  I know that I have certainly heard of people in her weight group getting pregnant and I may not have MD behind my name, nut then I'm guessing that the friend doesn't either...

(A hormonal preggers plus size mama who weighed 240 at conception and 18w4d later weighs 229)  :)
