I myself suffer from irregular periods. I never ovulated at the same/expected time frame. The best way to know when you are ovulating is to buy the ovulating tests. They are very similar to the pregnancy tests. Others may know other ways, but that was the best way for me to find out when I was ovulating. I had to have many ultrasounds to check on my fertility. I wasn't ovulating normalNormal saline flush, and the OB had me go thru several ultrasounds to help my with my fertilization. Hope this helps.
There is a book called "Taking Charge of your Fertility". It is very good and tells you how to chart your cycles w/basal body temperatureTemperature measurement, cervical mucous, etc. The charting will help you know if and when you have ovulated. Unfortunately your temperatureTemperature measurement will only tell you after you've ovulated, but there are other signs (cervical mucous) that will let you know that ovulation may be coming.
I have used OPKs and find that the digitalDigital rectal exam ones are less confusing than the "2 line" ones. There were days I would drive myself crazy trying to figure out if the 2nd line was as dark as the 1st.
Using this "method" with ovulation predictor kits (OPK) will give you a greater understanding of your cycles. If you ever have to see a fertility Dr., your Basal body temp charts may be helpful in determining any obvious issues.
