I also have PCOS and was prescribed metformin. I have only been on it for two weeks so I can't give you any insight into how effective it is, but my doctor did say it could take anywhere from 1 month- 6 months but that was with the other meds he prescribed for me.  Is metformin the only thing your doctor put you on?  My doctor put me on metformin, provera, clomid and ovidrel for this cycle.

i have pcos and have been on metformin since october 2006.  I got pregnant in december 2006 but had a m/c in febr.  after that i waited two cycles and went on femara and metformin with an u/s monitored cycle at my RE's office, had hcg trigger and got pregnant.  i also took prometrium after ovulation.  I am 10 weeks today and everything looks great.  Although metformin works for some people, many with pcos still need help with clomid or femara.

I have PCOS and was taking Metformin and Clomid and am 18 weeks pregnant with triplets.  It took me almost a year to get pregnant.  You might ask about Clomid at your next appointment.  It seems to be commonly prescribed with Metformin for PCOS.

I don't have PCOS, but my doctor put me on metformin anyway, because I was having trouble conceiving and had 2 m/c.  I did have 3 IUI's and 2 IVF's before, which were unsuccessful.  But, after I started metformin, together w/ follistim I got preg. w/ twins on the first IUI attempt.  I am now 15 wks 3 days.  I think it really works, good luck to you.
