the vena cava runs down your back on the right side, so sleeping on your left promotes the best blood flow to you (including to the uterus). but, you dont need to worry about this until 16-20 weeks.
I have 2 docs...both told me that how ever is comfortable .......sleep that way. The one said that laying on your back isn't the greatest, but when you are in a bed with pillows, etc it is ok. He said that once you progress past 25 weeks, you should really avoid it. He said my right side was fine though.
I have 3 lovely kids aged 18 14 and 12 and I slept in whatever position I was comfortable. As your bump grows and baby starts wriggling about because it is out of space natureNature-throid Natures tears will only allow you to lie in such a way that you and baby are ok.
I'm almost 23 weeks and I wake up on my back all the time (sleeping on my sides means an arm or shoulder or something goes to sleep or is painful). We can't control how we sleep, once we are asleep, but naturally our bodies will have us sleep in a position that is most comfortable and is relatively "safe" for our babies.
I will be 29 weeks tomorrow. I tried to follow the advise that sleeping on the left side is the best. But when I do sleep on my left I feel the baby fidgeting and maybe even struggling. I feel like I'm squishing him. Sleeping on my back is by far the most comfortable. I try to sleep on my right and when my hip and the arch between my rib cages hurt really bad, then I allow myself to sleep on my back until the pain goes away.
I am 23 weeks 1 day and i still find that i am waking up in the morning on my back! I try to sleep on my left side but sometimes it is just too uncomfortable and i cant get to sleep!! :) lol!
After that, left side is best, but right side is fine also. There isn't anything bad at all about being on the right side---it's just that the left is better for circulation.
I am a tummy sleeper and can still sleep that way at 20 weeks with a knee up. I will have a hard time when I can't sleep on my stomach at all. I know, it's so hard to get comfortable, and the bad thing is it will only get worse!!!:)
