positive pregnancy test 4.5 weeks after d & c

positive pregnancy test 4.5 weeks after d & c

After a long period of "trying" we finally had a positive pregnancy test on Sepember 18th.  At 5 weeks we had a blood test to confirm with HCG levels >10,000.  At seven weeks I went in for an exam an an ultrasound revealed the heartbeat had stopped probably around the 6 week mark.  I had a d & c on October 9th. My doctor told me that the recommendation to wait after a d & c until after the first normal period is more for emotional healing- that she herself had become pregnant right after a miscarriage and had a healthly 13 year daughter today.  Needless to say, we haven't been "careful"  So today, November 13th, with no period,  pain in my breasts and slight crampiness, I took a pregnancy test and it came back positive. Has anyone out there had any similar situations?  Could I be pregnant or is this just risidual hormone levels from my previous pregnancy.

My question for you is have you had a period since D&C? If not have you had a time when you thought you ovulated? It could be resedule but with a D&C there is nothing left in your uterus to produce the hormone. I would definetly call your dr and let them do a blood test and see what your levels are. If they are low and continueing to go down then you know it is from the last pg, if high and rising then you know new pg. I pray this helpful and I have been in your shoes.

Thanks so much for your reply.  I have not had my period since the D &C- just a tiny bit of bleeding for the few days right after the procedure.  I did think I ovulated towards the end of October.  I am so hopeful that this is a positive test- I guess my worry is that my HCG levels were so high with the last pregnancy that this is just lingering hormone in my system. I plan on calling my doctor's office this morning for a blood test.  I hope that everything worked out for you when you went through this emotional rollercoaster...

It could be residual but 4 weeks is a long time if it was less than 10000. When I had my m/c my numbers cut in half like every 2 days. I would take a couple more HPT's then call the Dr. for a BETA. I hope this is your miracle. Good Luck dear!

It sounds like it could be another pregnancy -- congratulations!!!  If you had a d&c, as brandy_bodiford said, your # will start to drop very quickly and you will be back to less than 5 within 2 weeks.  I m/c naturally at 5.5 weeks and my #'s dropped to less than 5 in less than 2 weeks.  The only way to know for sure though, is to have your hcg levels checked and see that they are increasing.

I'm in a similar situation where I detected ovulation 2 weeks after I m/c and now my AF is late.  I have decided to wait until tomorrow to test as that would be 14 dpo.  I too would be thrilled if I were pregnant again, as my dh and I have gone through 4 IVF cycles since we could not get pregnant on our own and the last cycle did take, but as I menitoned, I m/c.  I'm hoping that my body is ready to do it on it's own, now that it has been pregnant for the first time (at the ripe ole age of 42!).  I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is the BFP you have been waiting for!  Good luck and keep us posted!

I took another pregnancy test again this morning and positive again.  I called my doctor and she said it isn't likely that it is residual from my previous pregnancy because the d &c ws far enough back- however, she can't rule it out. She had me come in for blood work today and now I have to wait until Monday to get the results...then back for more to make sure my levels are rising. I am still very cautiously optimistic- I have had two chemical pregnancies and the miscarriage I am praying that this is it.  Good luck to you , Betsta!  Please let me know if you have any news-

That's great news and you're right, you should stay cautiously optimistic...but even I'm getting excited for you!  Sorry you have to wait until Monday for your blood results, don't you just hate the waiting?!?

I poas this morning and got a BFN, but AF hasn't shown up either.  I dont' have any symptoms of it starting either, so I'm not sure what to think.  I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens.....back to the waiting game.

Stay positive and keep me posted!

Not a great weekend. I woke up with AF yesterday. My doctor's office called me this morning with my blood results- my levels were at 14, a very low positive. Because my AF is normal, my doctor thinks this is likely a chemical pregnacy. She still doesn't think it's residual hormone levels because my d&c was back on October 9th. This will be the third chemical pregnacy I've had. On top of the miscarriage, I just feel very frustrated.   I scheduled another consultation appointment for next week to discuss having some further tests done to try and figure out why I can't seem to hold a pregnancy.  I have a two year old daughter who came along relatively easily- I definitely took that for granted...

Good luck to you Betsta- I hope you get the BFP you're waiting for!

I'm so sorry to hear this news for you.  I do hope that they are able to give you some answers or try to see why this is happening.   I would think that since you had your first child without any problems and not that long ago, that they should be able to figure out what's happening.  Please keep me posted with what they say.

Unfortunately for me, AF showed up Sunday morning.  So, it looks like we will be heading for our 5th IVF cycle sometime in December.

Keep me posted and I wish you all the best!
