possible ectopic pregnancy

possible ectopic pregnancy

I am being tested for a possible ectpoic pregnancy.  At 29 days after my last period my  Beta HCG was 615, then tested 48 hours later it was 2,650.  My doctor told me now I just have to wait for a sonogram at 6 weeks.  What does a big increase in 48 hours mean?  Is it possible it is still ectopic or is it a very good sign.  I am confused because my doctor said he would have been happy with just a double in 48 hours.  Any help would be appreciated.

I had an ectopic last month, but my levels were doubling as expected.  I've read that hcg levels more than doubling can indicate a normal healthy pregnancy, an abnormal pregnancy, or twins. I think it's a little too early to be worrying...you're only about 4.5 weeks along, right? (actually, I'd be kind of p***ed if my Dr. had me worrying this soon) My Dr. began to suspect an ectopic after the 2nd u/s showed nothing in the uterus, but my hcg was still doubling.  Just to be certain, he waited a week and did one more, and the results were the same. Is your Dr. going to continue checking your hcg in the meantime?  If your hcg continues to rise, maybe he can get you in sooner for an u/s.  Sorry I can't be of more help.  Try not to stress too much for now (I know- easier said than done...trust me, I really know).  I hope when he does do your u/s, you can update us with good news.

Thankyou for the info.  How far along were you when you started feeling the pain from the ectopic.  I will be 5 weeks tomorrow and I am imagining myself into pain.(I think)....  How did you know?

I don't think you should worry at this point.  In the 4th - 5th week of my current pregnancy, mine quadrupled in 48 hours as well.  Usually, the higher the numbers get, the longer they'll take to double.  There is no reason for you to suspect an ectopic unless you have cramping, spotting, bleeding or they can't see the sac, etc. in your uterus after 6 wks.  They suspected I had an ectopic too because at 5w6d the doc didn't see anything in my uterus but a few days later, on another machine, there was my bean, heart beating away!  I'm 13 wks now and all is well.  Hang in there!  GL and congrats!

I never felt any pain from the ectopic.  I really didn't know I was pregnant, but started having some spotting- which I never do between periods, so I took a hpt (actually, I had taken 2 before that, but they were neg), & it was +. My progesterone levels were low, so the Dr. knew there could be a problem.  He put me on Prometrium, which brought them up.  He didn't suspect an ectopic until the first u/s when I was six weeks.  There was no sac, but he kept checking my hormone levels and did two more u/s.  At 8+ weeks, there was still no sac- nothing.  But my levels were going up, so he knew there was a pregnancy somewhere-just not in the uterus.  Turns out he was right. I think it's too soon for you to be worrying- take it easy and try to relax.
