possible miscarriage? light bleeding that stopped abruptly

At 5w1d, I noticed a very small amount of brown blood when I wiped. I immediately called my doc's office. My doc was in surgery but I spoke to one of the nurses who asked me about the color of the blood, if I had any cramping, or if I saw any clots/tissue. I replied "only a very small amount of brown blood, no cramping, no clots or tissue." The nurse instructed me to carry on as usual and to call back if I saw any more blood, clots/tissue or began cramping.

About 2 hours later, I began bleeding bright red blood for less than five minutes. The bleeding stopped almost immediatly. Its almost 48 hours later and I haven't had any more bleeding. When I called the doctors office back, they recommended that I take it easy/rest as much as possible for the next few days and call if I have any more problems. I'm working with an EXCELLENT RE. He even took time out yesterday, (Saturday afternoon)to call and check on me. Other than being scared to death, I feel great!!!

Has anyone had a similar experience? DH and I have been TTC for years and news of this baby is such a blessing. I'm praying for the best... also would like some words of wisdom and any advice anyone has to offer. thanks!!

I had this happen to me twice. Both ended in missciages, one in the 4th week and the second in the 5th week.  My doctor was not concerned with a small amount of bleeding.  They said it could be implantation bleeding and not to worry. It was when the blood became bright red that I was to come in for a check of my HCG.  The second pregnancy, they took my progestrone level as soon as I got a + on a pregnancy test.  It came back two days later and was very low.  They gave me a shot of progesterone, but it was too late.  I began bleeding red that same day.  I hope the bleeding has not returned.  What ever the reason... you need to go to see the doctor.

Is 5w1d counted from the first day of your last period?  If so, it could be some implantation bleeding, so try not to be scared.  But do see the doc to check hormone levels, etc. asa you can.  Good luck!

I guess what people usually call "implantation bleeding" refers to just the day the embryo first gets a grip on the uterine lining, usually about day 19-24 after the first day of your LMP, or day 5-10 after ovulation.  But the placenta doesn't just make one little pinprick that day and that's it; it continues to develop and the blood connection(s) continue to expand, at least for a while in the pregnancy.  As this happens, there could possibly be a tiny bit of bleeding (especially if its growth knocks into a small polyp or something in the uterus).  I saw a tv special about the rare, rare event of a woman who had a fertilized egg migrate out of her uterus into her intestinal area, and it attached, found a blood supply, and actually grew to term (and fortunately didn't kill her thanks to some great doctoring).  When it came time for the Caesarean to bring out the baby, they had to leave the placenta behind because it was so connected to the intestines.  (After some time, it shrunk, and they were able to remove it.)  Anyway, what I took from this (long story short) is that the placenta connects over a zone instead of just one blood vessel, and over time, so some limited bleeding that stops could just be that, more connecting action.  If you are being well monitored, that's great.  All the best!

AnnieBrooke- I was 5W1D from my LMP when I initially saw the brown spotting. The brief spell of bright red blood occured about 2 hours later. Thanks for your reply, I really thought that impantation bleeding occurs much earlier.

It's now been about 60 hours since I've seen any blood. I'm praying that is a good sign.

Mels- How long was it from when you saw a small amount of blood to when you saw the bright red blood?

We did IVF and my RE has checked my hcg and progesterone twice this week. HCG went from 220 to 920 in 72 hours. The progesterone is fine thanks to nightly shots that I began taking just after the egg retrieval.

Glad to hear the bleeding has stopped.  The fact your HCG levels are rising is a positive as well. Keep good thoughts.  It may very well be implantation bleeding. Especially since it did not last that long.  Mine was different.  I had the dark spotting for 2 days before the red blood started.  I would get the dark spotting in the afternoons and nothing all night or morning. When the red blood started it was non-stop.  Yours is different. Did you see the doctor today?

I have already had one miscarriage, this is my second pregnancy:
Around 5 weeks I also started with some mild spotting, that progressed to heavy bleeding (when I urinated, I passed alot of bright red blood). I had bad cramping as well (for a couple days).  I thought for sure I was miscarrying, but it was too early to do much. I bled for about a week, then continued with brown spotting (which i'm still having).  My HCG levels were rising.  Today I had my 7 week ultrasound, expecting bad news...but she found a heartbeat.

I hope that makes you feel a bit better. My best friend also had a bit of spotting in her early pregnancy.

I would suggest to anyone with spotting/bleeding in early preganancy to request ultra sound.  I have two kids 2 1/2 year old girl and 1 1/2 year old boy.  They were both perfect preganancies.  Found out I was preganant again on March 3rd and discovered light bleeding a few weeks later.  Ultra sounds revealed blot clot.  Had few more scans over next few weeks. Blot clot hadn't reduced and eventually at 8 weeks gestation, blood clot encompassed preganancy sac and pulled it from wall of womb resulting in silent miscarriage. Had to have D&C.  Get it checked out!!!

I wish there was some kind of food, pill or herb that we could take that had a progesterone substitute in it for those of us who bleed or spot early on.  I already take baby asprin.  I need to go to the web and see what this progesterone connection is. Anybody know?

First off I would make an appointment with your doctor. It sounds like it could be a posibility of pregnancy. When I was pregnant with my first child I had some light to mild spotting and a little cramping. I was told that it was normal. It was mostly likely just an effect of the egg attaching to the uterine wall. If you think you might be pregnant, I suggest you see your doctor. Of course this could just be your body's reaction to stress or something also. There are a number of reasons for the lighter period and cramping. Same with a missed period. You should just go see your doctor.
