pre-eclampsia confused

pre-eclampsia confused

I developed pre-eclampsia in 3rd trimester of first
pregnancy.  I have subsquently been told two completely opposing things.  My OB says it is unlikely that I would have to worry about this with a second pregnancy later on.  However my internal medicine Doctor says I should avoid it at all costs, since according to him it is more likely to happen again.   ?

From what I've read, it is more common in first pregnancies than in subsequent pregnancies.  But you may have some unspoken underlying issues, such as lifestyle, weight, chronic high BP, or a family history of high BP, that may pre-dispose you to experiencing pre-eclampsia in future pregnancies.  When you say your internal med. Dr. said to avoid it at all costs, was he referring to pregnancy?  Because pre-eclampsia should not usually be a reason for not becoming pregnant again.  It is controllable with regular pre-natal care, proper diet, and in rare cases, medication.  So I would discuss that with your OB before deciding not to have more children based on having had pre-eclampsia during your first pregnancy.  I have pre-eclampsia each and every pregnancy, this is my 4th.  I control mine with meds because I have chronic High BP.  Other than that, my pregnancies are fairly uneventful.

Regards,
Shelly

My cousin had it with her first pregnancy but was just fine with her second. Gestational Diabetes was something I was supposed to be at very high risk for due to having it with my last pregnancy. I do not have it. Every pregnancy is different and different hormones and circumstances are involved each time...
