prenatal vitamins

Hi im 4 months pregnant. I have been taking prenatal vitamins & iron except for folic acid. I read that doctors should recommend folic acid the most  & should be taking them in the beginning of pregnancy or even prior. Is it too late for me to start taking folic acid at 4 months?  Would it be ok for me to take it without my doctor's prescription?

Start taking it now, your prenatal should have folate in it and many foods are rich in folate. You can find additional folic acid supplements just about anywhere, the standard dose is 800mcg, though some take a little more depending on family history. Ask your doc for their recommendation.

Most prenatal vitamins have folic acid in them.  Are you sure yours doesn't have it?

My doc recommeds 1mg (which is only available in a script). I usually just took the store brand with 800mcg, plus another 200mcg supplement of folic acid. It's not too late to start!!
